Job summary

3D Nanolab, Cardiff University, invites applications for a Research Associate to explore magnetotransport in nanoscale 3D magnetic systems. You will develop electrical contact strategies to interface with non-planar, free-standing 3D nanostructures and study transport via anisotropic magnetoresistance and Hall measurements.

The post is full-time and fixed-term for 24 months, starting 1 October 2026, embedded in the £18.8M EPSRC MetaHub.

Qualifications

  • Experimental physicist with a background in spintronics, nanoscale electrical transport, or magnetic device physics.
  • Experience designing and implementing electrical contacts for non-planar 3D nanostructures is advantageous.
  • Ability to work within large multi-institutional research programmes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimise novel electrical contact strategies for interfacing with non-planar, free-standing 3D nanostructures.
  • Study electrical transport in these systems using anisotropic magnetoresistance and Hall effect measurements.
  • Contribute to the EPSRC MetaHub project within Cardiff University and collaborate with UK partners.

Job description

Lab/Company : 3D Nanolab, Cardiff University

This is an exciting opportunity to join a leading research effort exploring magnetotransport in nanoscale 3D magnetic systems, linking geometric design, spin texture, and electronic functionality at the nanoscale. You will join the Cardiff 3D Nanomagnetism Group. The successful candidate will develop and optimise novel electrical contact strategies to interface with non-planar, free-standing 3D nanostructures and subsequently study electrical transport in these systems using anisotropic magnetoresistance and Hall effect measurements. The role is embedded within the £18.8M EPSRC MetaHub, which brings together leading UK institutions to pioneer 3D metamaterials across ICT, energy and sensing. The role will suit an experimental physicist with a background in spintronics, nanoscale electrical transport, or magnetic device physics, and provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the next generation of reconfigurable spin-based hardware. This post is full time, available from 1st October 2026 and is fixed term for 24 months.
