About the role:

The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) is seeking a committed and intellectually curious Research Associate in Ismaili Studies (South Asia Focus) on a 3-year fixed-term contract to contribute to the Institute’s world-leading research, teaching, and outreach in the field of South Asian Islamic studies.

Working within the South Asian Studies Unit, the postholder will carry out high-quality research on Ismaili communities and related Shi‘i and Sufi traditions in South Asia, and will contribute to publications, conferences, and academic events. The role also includes teaching on IIS postgraduate programmes, supporting student supervision, and engaging in outreach and knowledge‑exchange activities across the Institute.

This is an exciting opportunity for an early‑to‑mid‑career scholar to develop their academic profile while contributing to a globally respected institution at the front‑line of Islamic and Ismaili studies.

What we’re looking for:
  • A doctorate in a field related to South Asian Studies (applications welcomed from candidates who have submitted their PhD thesis and are awaiting viva).
  • Strong knowledge of Ismaili Studies and the intellectual history of Islam in South Asia.
  • Expertise in Shi‘i Studies with a South Asia regional focus.
  • Excellent command of at least two Indic languages, with working knowledge of Urdu and familiarity with additional regional languages advantageous.
  • Demonstrable research publication record and experience teaching and supervising students in Higher Education.
  • Ability to work with primary sources, manage multiple academic commitments, and communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
