Reporter: Chichester Observer series and Sussex

Do you have a passion for quality local journalism, great content and the ability to spot a trending story? The readership of the Chichester Observer series is growing, so we are investing in our team to make sure we are writing more stories that people want to read.

The Observer is a quality newspaper with a prestigious app and a website, Sussex World, that has a significant audience across the county.

Already living in a world of social media, you will have a grasp of SEO and a natural understanding of what makes great digital content, and the hunger to learn and embrace change as our business develops.

The role is based full-time in our Chichester office and we will consider applications from both trainee and senior reporters.

In addition to your responsibilities for the Observer you will be expected to contribute to our Sussex-wide content and to be available for out-of-hours and weekend duty rotas.

  • Keen to be part of the community, to find off-diary stories, and to represent our prestigious brand at key local events
  • With a keen eye for a story and an understanding of what drives audience, along with a natural understanding of SEO and social media
  • Who can demonstrate the ability to follow analytics, identify content trends and come up with original ideas
  • Who understands how to optimise content for search and Google Discover
  • Who knows how to use social to drive engagement through words, images, video and Reels
  • Who is comfortable in a fast-paced media environment but has the organisational skills to plan ahead
  • Who is capable of producing accurate copy fast
Skills / Experience
Essential
  • NCTJ qualification or equivalent experience
  • Strong writer, storyteller and communicator
  • A good knowledge of media law and the Editors Code of Practice
  • A team player: able to work closely with colleagues with various specialities
  • An understanding of how tone impacts brand values
  • Understanding of SEO principles and best practice
  • Good interview skills and a tenacity to find the right person to talk to
Desirable
  • NCTJ Gold Standard including 100wpm shorthand
  • Able to drive and have access to a car in this predominantly rural area
  • Experience of working in a newsroom, agency or on a digital platform
  • Previous experience of using a publishing content management system
  • Familiarity with basic photo-editing tools
  • Experience of video production and editing, including Facebook Reels
