Job summary

The Open University is seeking two Student Mental Health Advisers to provide specialist, one-to-one support for students with enduring or complex mental health needs. You will manage a caseload of approximately 25 students and work with NHS services and external agencies to coordinate appropriate support.

Role sits within the Student Wellbeing Team, delivering interventions, risk assessments, and psychoeducation while maintaining compliant records.

Qualifications

  • Degree or professional qualification in Mental Health Nursing, Social Work, Psychology, Counselling or related field, or equivalent substantial experience supporting adults with complex mental health needs.
  • CPD evidence including CBT, Solution-Focused Therapy, coaching or mindfulness-based approaches.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver specialist one-to-one interventionist support to students with enduring or complex mental health conditions.
  • Complete comprehensive mental health assessments, identify risk factors and develop practical support plans.
  • Undertake risk assessments, safety planning and respond to crises or self-harm risk.
  • Manage an independent caseload with accurate records and timely escalation per university policies.
  • Provide practical, solution-focused interventions and psychoeducation to support wellbeing and study.
  • Coordinate support with NHS services, Student Support Teams, Disability Support and external agencies.
  • Develop referral pathways across the University and advise colleagues on complex matters.
