Job summary

Turnitin is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to shape the technical direction of core platform capabilities used across Turnitin products. This remote-first role focuses on backend architecture, cloud-native solutions, and scalable distributed systems that serve millions of users globally.

You will lead design decisions, mentor engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable and secure software at scale.

Qualifications

• Significant experience building and operating large-scale backend systems.
• Strong expertise in Java and modern cloud technologies.
• Experience with AWS serverless services (Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, SNS, SQS, EventBridge).
• Kubernetes (K8s) and cloud-native technologies.
• CI/CD tools and test automation experience.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems and APIs.
• Ability to influence technical direction and lead complex initiatives.
• Excellent collaboration in distributed teams and mentoring mindset.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and development of shared backend services and platform capabilities.
• Drive architectural decisions and technical strategy across teams.
• Build scalable, highly available cloud-native solutions using Java and AWS.
• Mentor engineers and promote engineering excellence across the org.
• Collaborate with product, architecture, and engineering teams to solve complex challenges.
• Champion best practices in quality, performance, reliability, and security.
