The role includes leading coding for complex cases, maintaining accuracy, and supporting the coding team with audits and training. Band 5 includes a 10% Recruitment & Retention Premium, subject to renewal.

Qualifications

  • Good level of education; GCSEs in English, Maths and Science (C or above).
  • Completion of NCCQ or equivalent clinical coding courses and up-to-date refresher training.
  • Educated to undergraduate degree level; qualified clinical coding auditor/trainer.

Job overview

To undertake the role of a Clinical Coder to clinical groups or specialties as appropriate, abstracting from patient notes and other information sources and assigning suitable codes onto the Trust’s patient administration system in line with National standards. Attend training sessions as necessary and work to maintain allocated reference manuals and standards manuals so that they are always up to date with national guidance.

We are recruiting Band 5 ACC-qualified Clinical Coders (with a 10% Recruitment & Retention Premium).

Please note that only the Band 5 role is subject to the R&R Premium (subject to renewal in December 2026). This will be applied upon commencement of the role. This will be included in the salary package from the start of employment.

Main duties of the job
  • Take lead responsibility for the coding of complex activity including deceased patients to the highest standard of quality coded data as verified by audit
  • Maintain coding accuracy when audited in line with national requirements
  • Assist the Management team in validation of coded data and to monitor and report on performance and data quality issues as appropriate
  • Organise and take lead responsibility for the cover of absent team members, extraction of clinical information from patient’s case notes and the coding of this information across a variety of wards and specialities
  • Participate in the development and management of coding services to enhance the accuracy of clinical coding
  • Exhibit expert knowledge of clinical coding data aspects in support of Payment by Results and participate in the management of the clinical coding service to provide accurate, timely and completed coded clinical data for all episodes of care for all specialties within the Trust using ICD10 and OPCS4

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Support the Deputy Head of Clinical Administration in the development and delivery of training sessions and feedback to clinical coders, clinicians and managers in order to improve the quality of clinical coded data
  • Support the Clinical Coding team with answering coding queries from all areas of the Trust as and when required
  • Take responsibility for maintaining and continuously developing in depth analysis of clinically coded data. Work closely with the Clinical Coding team in order to ensure that the Trust maximises its quality of coded data whilst conforming to clinical coding rules and conventions
  • Feedback and participate in clinical audits or validation work as required by the clinical team to ensure high quality documentation.
  • Participate in audits with the Clinical Coding Auditor to ensure that the Trust always has high quality clinically coded data available for the purpose of analysis and income generation
  • Respond positively to clinical coding queries from outside the department, ensuring that the information supplied is both accurate and suitable for its intended purpose
  • Provide mentor/coaching support to the Clinical Coding trainees to aid development and knowledge.

Person specification
Qualifications
  • A good level of education, Minimum GCSE or equivalent C and above in English, Maths and Science. NCCQ(UK) Completion of appropriate clinical coding courses, including up to date with refresher training.
  • Educated to undergraduate degree level. Qualified clinical coding auditor/trainer.
Experience
  • At least two years Clinical Coding experience. Experience analysing and appropriately coding complex clinical information across a wide range of clinical specialities. Previous employment in an acute NHS Trust.
  • Experience with EPR systems Experience with 3M Medicode. Experience coding all specialties including Neurosurgery, T&O and obstetrics.
Knowledge
  • Thorough knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology terms in relation to clinical coding. Comprehensive knowledge/understanding of health records and hospital procedures.
  • Knowledge of mortality quality indicators.
Skills
  • Ability to use clinical coding knowledge to communicate complex coding rules to clinical and non-clinical staff. Ability to analyse and interpret complex data. Ability to work to deadline whilst maintaining high quality. Ability to work in partnership with others to deliver deadline targets. Ability to motivate others. Good level of competence in Windows-based applications
