Job summary

The University of Bath invites applications from ambitious graduates to join an Accelerated Knowledge Transfer (AKT) project with Synoptix Ltd working on reinforcement learning to control PTZ cameras. As an AKT Associate you will work under professors Simsek and George Leete, applying academic skills to an industrial project, with mentoring and access to university resources.

This fixed-term role lasts 3 months, starting by 13 November 2026, and offers experience at the interface of AI research

Qualifications

• BSc/MSc/PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science or closely related discipline.
• Experience with modern reinforcement learning algorithms using function approximation.
• Ability to manage workload independently and effectively.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Technical report writing experience.
• Intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for research-driven innovation.
• Resilience and problem-solving mindset.

Responsibilities

• Investigate how reinforcement learning can be used to control PTZ cameras in complex maritime environments.
• Collaborate with Synoptix and university supervisors to deliver research outcomes.
• Contribute to development and testing using synthetic environments and edge hardware.
