About the Unit

We are recruiting for our Acute Medical Unit and would like to extend an exciting offer to join our existing dynamic expert nursing team. Participate in the assessment of care needs of the clients and the development, implementation and evaluation of care, promoting high standards, demonstrating a compassionate nature and patient dignity.

Responsibilities

• Work as part of the Urgent Care team, promoting good interdepartmental relationships.
• Ensure high standards of care are given in relation to agreed standards, policies and procedures of Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
• Assist in ensuring new nursing procedures, research and initiatives are evaluated and where appropriate incorporated into clinical practice.
• Store and administer prescribed drugs safely in line with legal and Trust requirements.
• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patients' problems producing a written plan of care as required.
• Report, document and evaluate accidents and unit incidents via Datix reporting, informing manager and updating health and safety register.
• Participate in educating staff and act as an NMC Assessor for student nurses.
• Request and carry out clinical investigations to aid and confirm the diagnosis, liaising with medical colleagues to ensure deviations from expected clinical findings are monitored/reviewed.

Clinical Investigations

• Arterial blood gas monitoring & interpretation of blood gases

Qualifications & Experience

• Experienced, motivated and forward‑thinking nurse with proven ability at staff nurse level in acute medicine.
• Up‑to‑date knowledge, excellent communication skills and team‑working abilities.
• Good time‑management skills and the ability to work within a busy environment with a high demand of admissions and discharges.
• Flexible team player who can work a mixture of shifts across a 7‑day rota.

Unit Overview

AMU is a medical unit that has a high demand of admissions and discharges. We receive medical referrals from GP, Paramedic crews, speciality teams and A&E and work closely with all MDT.
