Job description
Overview

This newly created, high‑impact role is a two‑year fixed‑term post aimed at enhancing palliative and end‑of‑life care across a broad geographical area. The position centres on developing and implementing care pathways, supporting clinical teams, and delivering staff training—including the ICB palliative care training resource.

Responsibilities
  • Pathways of care and active support to clinical teams in all aspects of palliative and end‑of‑life care.
  • Training of staff at RJAH and support for the ICB palliative care training resource.
  • Policy development.
  • Strategic development and overview.
  • Development and delivery of quality improvement and service transformation.
  • Ensure ongoing clinical support for the nursing and medical teams who care for patients within the Trust entering the final stages of their lives, offering high‑level expertise and knowledge in palliative and end‑of‑life care (PEoLC).
  • Support and educate staff without direct supervision, working autonomously as the lead nursing/AHP expert in specialist palliative and end‑of‑life care.
  • Liaise with outside agencies across a large referral geography, including hospices, local service providers and other Trusts.
  • Operate across the whole Trust within different Delivery Units, working with existing specialist PEoLC teams (Sheldon Ward, Montgomery Unit, Spinal Team and MCSI teams) and pre‑operative optimisation teams.
  • Participate in high‑level reviews of the service and future strategy development for the PEoLC pathway.
  • Oversee clinical audit activity—local, regional and national compliance and audit against NICE guidance.
  • Help the Trust achieve and maintain standards required by regulators such as CQC and work closely with commissioners (ICB) to ensure this.
  • May independently prescribe where qualified.
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional with significant palliative care experience.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Proven track record in project management, policy development, audit and quality improvement.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to professional development and service enhancement.
  • Must be able to evidence satisfaction of the NMC Objective Structured Clinical Examination Test of Competence or be pending registration.
