Job Title: Refuse/Recycling Driver Supervisor
Job Purpose
To be responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliableoperation of refuse and recycling collection vehicles while leading andsupervising collection crews. The postholder will ensure the delivery ofhigh-quality waste and recycling collection services to residents andbusinesses, maintaining compliance with health and safety requirements,operational procedures, and customer service standards.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Duties and Vehicle Management
- Safelydrive and operate allocated refuse/recycling collection vehicles inaccordance with road traffic legislation, the Highway Code, and Councilprocedures.
- Carryout daily vehicle inspections, defect reporting, and routine maintenancechecks using appropriate systems and documentation.
- Ensurevehicles and associated equipment are maintained in a clean, safe, andserviceable condition.
- Operatein-cab technology, route management systems, and tachographs accuratelyand effectively.
- Complywith all site rules and procedures when transporting, unloading, anddisposing of waste or recyclable materials at designated facilities.
Crew Supervision and Leadership
- Lead,supervise, and provide direction to refuse/recycling collection crewsthroughout daily operations.
- Ensureall crew members work safely and follow approved Safe Systems of Work andoperational procedures.
- Maintaineffective communication with crew members to support safe, efficient, andproductive collections.
- Monitorcrew performance and provide guidance to resolve operational challenges asthey arise.
- Supportother operational teams and collection rounds when required to ensureservice continuity.
Service Delivery and Route Management
- Overseethe successful completion of allocated collection routes and ensureservice standards are achieved.
- Resolveissues that may affect collections, including access restrictions, parkedvehicles, obstructions, communal collection points, and fly tippingincidents.
- Assistwith loading refuse and recycling containers when operationally required.
- Contributeto the development and continuous improvement of collection routes tomaximise efficiency and productivity.
- Useinitiative and judgement to address operational issues while reportingsignificant matters to supervisors.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Ensurecompliance with all health and safety legislation, risk assessments, safeworking practices, and service procedures.
- Promotea strong safety culture and minimise risks to crew members, members of thepublic, and other road users.
- Wearand maintain all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensureteam compliance with safety requirements.
- Reportaccidents, incidents, hazards, and vehicle defects promptly andaccurately.
Customer Service and Community Engagement
- Actas an ambassador for the waste and recycling service when interacting withresidents and businesses.
- Provideadvice and guidance on recycling schemes, waste management requirements,and participation initiatives.
- Respondto customer enquiries professionally, courteously, and in line withcustomer service standards.
- Supportthe Council's commitment to delivering high-quality and customer-focusedservices.
Administration and Record Keeping
- Completeall required paperwork, electronic records, timesheets, work schedules,and incident reports accurately and within required timescales.
- Maintainclear and accurate operational records to support service monitoring andcompliance requirements.
- Participatein training, development activities, and team meetings to maintainprofessional competence.
Experience Required
- Experiencedriving large commercial vehicles within waste collection, recycling, logistics, transport, or a similar operational environment.
- Experiencesupervising or leading a team in a busy operational setting.
- Experienceworking within health and safety regulations and safe systems of work.
- Experienceresolving operational issues and making effective decisions in afast-paced environment.
- Experiencedealing professionally with customers and members of the public.
- Previousexperience within local authority waste management or environmentalservices.
- Experienceusing in-cab technology, route management systems, or electronic reportingsystems.
- Experienceoperating refuse collection vehicles or specialist waste managementequipment.
Qualifications and Requirements
- ValidCategory C (Class 2) LGV/HGV Driving Licence.
- DriverCertificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
- ValidDigital Tachograph Card.
- Goodunderstanding of road traffic regulations and vehicle safety requirements.
- Abilityto communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and members ofthe public.
- Healthand Safety-related qualification or training.
- FirstAid certification.
- WasteManagement, Recycling, or Environmental Services-related training.
