Job description

Thrive Group Oldham are currently recruiting on behalf of Oldham Council for Refuse Loaders. Please see job description below;

Expectations of the Role:
  • The role is very physical (mostly manual handling of heavy waste containers).
  • Walk a number of miles per day (dependent on collection round).
  • Work in all types of weather with the correct uniform and provisions each day (e.g., cold/hot drinks and food, additional clothing, waterproofs).
  • Adhere to health & safety instructions (Safe Systems of work) detailed in the Handbook, provided during induction.
  • Work within tight time frames to complete rounds.
  • Interact with members of the public, mindful of behaviour and approach.
  • Represent the council and THRIVE; inappropriate actions and behaviour will not be tolerated.
Working Week:

The Waste Management Service works Monday to Friday, with occasional overtime on Saturdays. The standard working day is 9 hours 10 minutes long with a 45‑minute break. Bank Holidays are a normal working day and are offered at double pay for those selected to work. Start time is 7am every day; the manager checks you in and assigns you to your round and vehicle before 7:15am. Finish time is 17:10pm each day. Please report to the depot window to register for your shift. If you are late, the council reserves the right to turn you away and send you home without pay.

Uniform and PPE:

Full uniform and PPE will be provided by Oldham Council. It must be worn exactly as supplied (apart from headwear such as caps, hats or undershirts). Failure to comply may result in removal from work. Report any defects or issues in your uniform/PPE to your line manager immediately. Disciplinary action may be taken for non‑compliance as it affects health and safety.

PPE Requirements: Hard sole and steel‑toe capped boots, a Grade 3 highly visual vest, and mandatory hearing protection when working a combined round (collecting glass, cans, and plastic bottles).

Rates of pay: £13.18 per hour, rising to £13.47 after 12 qualifying weeks of service.

Temp to perm opportunities available for the right candidates.
