Job summary

Randstad Education is recruiting Academic & Therapeutic Tutors to deliver 1-to-1 and small-group support in the South Essex cluster (Basildon, Hawkwell, Benfleet and nearby areas). Roles cover flexible, sessional, part-time and full-time opportunities with travel between hubs.

This frontline position supports pupils with SEND/SEMH, trauma and anxiety, combining academic tutoring with therapeutic approaches.

Qualifications

• Experience with SEND/SEMH and complex needs.
• Strong knowledge in core subjects (English, maths, science) or therapeutic mentoring.
• Enhanced DBS check or willingness to obtain one.
• Willingness to travel locally across the South Essex cluster.

Responsibilities

• Tailored academic delivery and lesson planning aligned with curriculum.

About the Role

We are seeking dedicated

Academic & Therapeutic Tutors

to deliver tailored, 1-to-1 and small-group support for pupils in our

Our students often present with complex needs, including Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), or barriers related to school trauma and anxiety. You will play a pivotal role in re-engaging these learners, building their self-belief, and delivering high-impact academic and therapeutic interventions.

Coverage Area

This role covers a compact, highly accessible geographic cluster across South Essex. Pupils are primarily located within a tight triangle between:

Basildon

Hawkwell

(Travel between locations is minimal, with key hubs situated within 5-12 miles of one another.)

Key Responsibilities

• Tailored Academic Delivery: Plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate learning sessions aligned with the national curriculum, functional skills, or vocational pathways.
• Therapeutic Engagement: Utilise trauma-informed, therapeutic approaches to help students regulate emotions, develop resilience, and rebuild confidence.
• Individualised Learning Plans (ILPs): Assess pupil needs, monitor progress, and adapt delivery to match each student's unique pace and learning style.
• Maintain rigorous safeguarding standards, act as a trusted key professional, and liaise closely with parents, carers, multi-agency teams, and local authorities.
• Progress Tracking: Provide qualitative feedback and session notes to track engagement, emotional development, and academic achievement.

Who We Are Looking For

• We welcome applications from qualified teachers, experienced tutors, higher-level teaching assistants (HLTAs), therapeutic mentors, and practitioners with backgrounds in youth work or mental health.
• Demonstrated experience working with children or young people with SEND, SEMH, or complex emotional needs.
• Strong subject knowledge in core academic subjects (English, Maths, Science) or specialist therapeutic mentoring experience.
• Excellent relational and de-escalation skills with a flexible, patient, and empathetic approach.
• Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one registered on the Update Service).
• Ability to travel locally across the South Essex cluster (Basildon, Benfleet, Hawkwell).
• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent therapeutic/coaching qualifications.
• Specialised training in Trauma-Informed Practice, NVR (Non-Violent Resistance), Team Teach, or MAPA/Safety-Pod.
