Job summary

Fusion People is seeking an experienced Rail Ecologist to support vegetation management and ecological work across the UK rail network. The role blends office-based assessment with on-site ecological support and offers technical guidance to operational teams and clients.

Based anywhere in England or Wales, candidates should be willing to attend sites nationwide, initially focusing on the Southern and Wales regions.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Zoology or a related discipline.
  • Experience in ecological consultancy or similar environmental roles.
  • Solid knowledge of UK wildlife legislation and protected species requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake desk-based ecological and habitat assessments using Magic Maps and DataMapsWales.
  • Review ecological records, surveys, mapping and existing site information.
  • Identify ecological constraints and protected species risks associated with vegetation clearance.
  • Provide practical advice on vegetation removal and appropriate working methods and timing.
  • Prepare and review ecological assessments, method statements and risk assessments.
  • Advise on protected species, including nesting birds, bats, badgers, reptiles and amphibians.
  • Give toolbox talks and briefings on ecology method statements and appropriate working methods.
  • Identify when further surveys, specialist advice or licensing may be required.
  • Liaise with clients, railway infrastructure teams, contractors and external ecologists.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to operational teams out on site, including site check-ins and engagement tours.
  • Undertake site visits and ecological inspections when required.

We're seeking an experienced Rail Ecologist to support vegetation management and ecological work across the UK rail network. This role blends office-based assessment with on-site ecological support, offering technical guidance to operational teams and clients.

Candidates can be based anywhere in England or Wales but must be willing to attend sites nationally, initially focusing on the Southern and Wales regions.

Rail Ecologist - REQUIREMENTS
  • A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Zoology or a related discipline
  • Solid experience within ecological consultancy or a similar environmental role
  • Strong understanding of UK wildlife legislation and protected species requirements
  • Excellent report-writing and desk-based assessment skills
  • Experience assessing ecological risks associated with vegetation clearance or infrastructure projects
  • Confident communicator with strong practical problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines
  • CIEEM membership (or working towards it) is desirable
  • Railway or Network Rail experience is essential---
