Job summary

Network Rail seeks a Design Engineer to shape engineering projects from concept to detailed design, coordinating across disciplines with suppliers and contractors to deliver compliant railway solutions.

You will assess design options for safety, performance and sustainability, turning project requirements into practical deliverables and ensuring technical assurance throughout the lifecycle. London-based, full-time permanent role with emphasis on collaboration and delivery.

Qualifications

• Engineering degree or equivalent qualification.
• Strong evaluation and decision-making skills.
• Working knowledge of rail engineering across disciplines.
• Experience with using BRT or Open Rail for railway alignment and geometry.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Appreciation of rail infrastructure life cycle stages.
• CDM, risk assessment and external audit competency.
• Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution.
• Familiarity with longitudinal bearer systems.
• Experience in design, installation and maintenance.
• Formal qualifications in risk identification and assessment.

Responsibilities

• Shape engineering solutions from early concept through to detailed design.
• Explore and assess design options, balancing safety, performance, sustainability and value.
• Turn project requirements into practical, deliverable designs that meet engineering standards.
• Collaborate across disciplines with project teams, suppliers, consultants and contractors.
• Manage technical changes and interfaces, considering cost, programme and performance.
• Provide technical assurance, supporting engineering checks and safety-critical design requirements.
• Support successful project delivery by ensuring the right engineering expertise and resources are in place.
