Job description

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Our Strategic Consulting team helps clients address complex challenges across the rail sector. Working as part of a collaborative and multidisciplinary team of transport planners, economists and business case specialists, we provide commercial, analytical and strategic advice that supports better investment, service planning and policy decisions.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and ambitious Rail (Commercial) Consultant to join our London-based Strategic Consulting team.

You will work on complex and high-profile rail projects, helping clients understand passenger markets, revenue opportunities and the commercial implications of changes to services, fares, ticketing and infrastructure. Combining data analysis, commercial insight and analytical modelling, you will support rail strategies, business cases, investment decisions and service planning.

Working with train operators, Network Rail, government bodies and regional transport authorities, you will contribute across the full project lifecycle. Your responsibilities will include demand and revenue analysis, forecasting and modelling, reporting, stakeholder engagement and strategic advisory support.

This is an excellent opportunity to further develop your commercial, analytical and strategic consulting skills within a supportive, multidisciplinary environment. As part of Arup’s UKIMEA-wide Rail Planning capability, you may also have opportunities to contribute to projects across the region.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective, in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning, to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for rail professionals who enjoy solving complex problems through data analysis and commercial insight. You will bring:

  • Experience in rail consulting, transport planning, commercial analysis, revenue management, forecasting, economics, data analysis or a related field.
  • Excellent analytical and numerical skills, with experience using Excel, developing models and analysing complex datasets to support informed decision-making.
  • A strong understanding of transport markets, customer behaviour and the factors influencing rail demand and revenue.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex analysis into clear recommendations for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • The ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, manage priorities effectively and build strong client and stakeholder relationships.
Knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas would be beneficial:
  • Rail industry forecasting methodologies, including PDFH.
  • Forecasting tools such as MOIRA or MOIRA2.
  • Business case development and economic appraisal.
  • Working with the Department for Transport, Network Rail, train operators or other rail industry organisations.
