Job description

Anexciting opportunity has arisen for a suitable candidate to join the Ultrasoundteam as an Apprentice Sonographer. The post offers the successful candidate theopportunity to train as a Sonographer whilst also working for the Trust underannex 30 T&C's at band 5 level. Thetraining will be provided at Sheffield Hallam University and at completion willaward a BSc (Hons) Medical Ultrasound. Main duties of the job

Thesuccessful candidate will be working within the Ultrasound team and will berequired to work across all hospital sites during their training. Weare a busy teaching hospital providingsecondary and tertiary care. Theultrasound department consists of a multi-disciplinary team who work closelytogether. We are a friendly, welcoming and inclusive group of people whoenjoy working together. This is an exciting opportunity for the rightcandidate to develop their ultrasoundskills in a fast paced and pro active environment.

Thepost holder will report directly to the Ultrasound Team Managers and will beexpected to meet the following criteria

  • To provide high quality patient care.
  • Commitment to learn and complete the required training for the degree award.
  • Support the service as an assistant if required.
  • Independent learning.
  • 1 day per week supported learning time.

Oncompletion of the course the successful candidate will be expected to offer aminimum of 2 years employment to the Trust. To progress to senior pay bands(band 7 and above) the candidate needs to be aware that they would berequired to complete further post graduate training (PgCert).

Candidatesmust be willing and able to attend Sheffield Hallam University on a regular basis.

Job responsibilities

Work to local protocols.

Ensure patients have given informedconsent prior to radiographic examinations and where necessary advise them ofthe potential risks.

Apply a high level of manualdexterity in acquiring accurate, high quality diagnostic images, adaptingstandard technique when necessary.

Operate advanced software onspecialist radiological equipment, requiring excellent hand-eye co-ordinationand manual dexterity.

Review images and where necessary,to seek advice when additional images may be required, prior to patientdeparture from the department.

Ensure that images are presentedfor reporting purposes in a timely and accurate manner.

Recognise and identify radiographicabnormalities, following training and authorisation and using the appropriatescheme of work (Red Dot / Comments)

Prepare and clear away preparationtrolleys for contrast examinations.

Ensure appropriate infectioncontrol measures are utilised, paying particular attention to personalprotection as well as the management of equipment and linen contaminated bybodily fluids.

Responsible for the care, comfortand clinical well-being of the patient during the radiological examination.This includes the monitoring or administration of pre-prescribed oxygen underdirect supervision

Liaison with safeguarding andexternal agencies when suspicion of patient in danger, for example, childprotection team

Taking an active role in audit,development and research (on an occasional basis)

Understand the emergency proceduresin the departments worked in and responsibilities in a MAJAX

ffectivelyliaise with all disciplines of staff.

Participate in the safe transfer ofpatients and equipment within the department and hospital, using manualhandling guidelines and risk assessments.

Communicate negotiated changes tostaff rosters to a senior radiographer.

Organise personal workload in linewith clinical priorities.

Report deficits in the dataintegrity of the Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture ArchivingCommunication System (PACS).

Report clinical, non-clinical andradiation incidents in line with Trust and departmental risk managementpolicies.

Enter accurate patient andexamination data into RIS and

Maintain accurate records at alltimes.

Understand the contingenciesrequired when electronic systems fail.

Familiar with the range oftechnical applications available on Imaging Equipment.

Ensure that equipment faults arereported to the relevant Senior Radiographer.

Assist in regular Quality Assurance(QA), including equipment testing.

Wear personal protective equipmentwhen required

Care for, check and maintain highstandards of cleanliness of clinical equipment to minimise spread ofinfection

Maintaining high standards ofcleanliness in examination rooms to minimise spread of infection

Ensure safe disposal of linen andclinical waste from the department

As part of the radiology teamensure all equipment is maintained to a high standard and used appropriately.

Assess specific communication needsof individual patients, where there may be barriers with communication e.g.complex/sensitive nature of information.

Communicate effectively andempathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after anexamination.

Work as part of themulti-disciplinary team within and without the radiology department, takingresponsibility for defined tasks as determined by a Senior Radiographer.

Act as a source of information forRadiology Assistants and students.

Maintain effective verbal and/orwritten communication and working relationships, with patients, colleagues,other hospital staff, relatives and visitors

Recognise the potential forconflict in relationships and seek to minimise this and contribute toeffective communication and team working.

Ensure that the confidentiality ofall information gained in the course of undertaking the role is safeguardedand maintained in accordance with professional, local and national guidelinesand regulations e.g. Data Protection Act (1998).

Recognise and report when apatients well-being may be at risk by reporting to safeguarding.

Ensure written and electronicrecords are maintained accurately and timely for self and others.

Ensure the computerised picturearchiving and communication system is the accurate record of the examinationsundertake on every patient imaged.

Participate in ethically approvedaudit projects, including gathering evidence for best practice assessment,either of their own work, that of the department or others, as required.

Qualifications
  • Qualifications - Essential CriteriaGCSE Maths, English and a Science subject Level 2 or above (previous C)
  • Evidence of successful formal study at level 3
  • Working towards BSc (or equivalent) in Medical Ultrasound (to move from annex 30 at conclusion).
Experience
  • A minimum of six months experience in a health and social care capacity, including any placements or work-based learning undertaken as part of a Level 3 qualification.
