Job description

Job Description:
Your impact

We are recruiting for a Senior/Principal Systems Engineer, to join our ECRS Mk2 project within the Typhoon sector. This is a technically challenging area of the business; addressing customer requirements for flexible, high performance systems capable of performing the role of primary sensor on some of the world’s most technically advanced combat aircraft. The team you will be joining is a diverse mix of Systems Engineers, Software Engineers, and Technical Specialists who bring together a wealth of experience and expertise to collaborate, innovate, and deliver cutting‑edge solutions.

You will be part of the team undertaking the requirements management, detailed design and functional development of the Radar, primarily focussed on system and data management aspects as well as design for reliability, maintainability and testability (RMT). Work packages are defined around a traditional V-model Systems Engineering framework and implemented using an incremental, domain driven development process. Dependent on your ambitions and skills, we will discuss how the responsibilities below can be tailored for you.

What you’ll do
  • Analyse Customer/Purchaser requirements and identify System functions to satisfy these requirements.
  • Own technical delivery of work packages and incremental design features in areas such as:
    • Built-in-test and failure management
    • Coordinated power‑up and shutdown sequencing of a complex, distributed system
    • Operating state and power state management
    • Data Management (recording, distribution, retrieval, and erasure)
    • Security features
  • Contribute to System Architecture and allocation of functions to Line Replaceable Items (LRIs) utilising Cameo to perform Model Based Systems Engineering.
  • Author System, LRI, and LRI Subdomain requirements, and author tests to verify these requirements
  • Identify and specify LRI and LRI Subdomain interfaces.
  • Lead cross‑disciplinary collaboration and coordination to ensure coherent system design across multiple subsystems and stakeholder groups
  • Drive the allocation of system functionality to Hardware, Firmware, and Software disciplines, supporting implementation and integration activities.
  • Support integration & test of specified functionality and contribute to defect resolution.
Dependent on experience, you may also:
  • Provide technical direction for the design, as well as promotion of good-practice and general guidance to the wider Systems team.
  • Take responsibility for project deliverables or large scale work packages.
  • Mentor, coach and potentially line‑manage other engineers within the team.
What you’ll bring
Required Experience:
  • Understanding of full‑lifecycle Systems Engineering principles
  • Experience in the design and capture of complex hardware, firmware and/or software interactions
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to solve complex engineering challenges where design complexity and uncertainty is present
  • Ability to work within an experienced multidisciplinary engineering team
  • Experience in writing and managing technical requirements
Desirable Experience:
  • Experience, or a strong interest in, Model‑Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) including:
    • Working in accordance with a defined architectural framework (preferably MagicGrid)
    • Use of the Systems Modelling Language (SysML)
  • Experience of defining and managing requirements, maintaining traceability through System and Subsystem design activities using IBM DOORS
  • Awareness of RMT engineering principles such as (built-in-test, fault identification and isolation, failure handling/fault tolerance)
  • Experience in integration, test, and verification of complex engineering products
  • A desire to evaluate and improve processes and tools
  • Experience of working in an agile lifecycle
  • Experience of working with configuration management tools
  • Experience using the Atlassian tool sets (Confluence, Jira and Bitbucket)
For those with extensive experience, we would also be looking for:
  • Demonstrable experience within, and the ability to contribute to shape complex areas of system design
  • Demonstrable experience taking responsibility for outcomes and contributing to technical decisions
