Job description
Overview

We are seeking a highly qualified Hardware Manager to lead the team launching, maintaining, developing, and operating an on-premises Helios quantum computer at a customer site. Helios is our next-generation quantum computer with 98 physical qubits and error rates < 10^-3. This will be our second Hardware-as-a-Service offering following our installation of a quantum computer at RIKEN’s Wako, Japan campus. The manager in this position will lead a group of technical staff, including Ph.D. scientists, and oversee onsite all aspects of the quantum computer’s daily operation and development. To do so, this role will be comprised of equal parts of individual technical contribution, technical leadership, and personnel management. As such, candidates will require a broad and deep understanding of quantum computing, atomic physics, and/or technical operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of scientists to launch, maintain, develop, and operate an on-premises Helios quantum computer
  • Meet high operational standards and exceed all customer contract requirements
  • Work cross-functionally to support site visits, lab tours, and overall site operations
  • Partner with Quantinuum staff and external collaborators to develop the local quantum ecosystem and generate high-quality research and application demonstrations using the Helios system
  • Hire, mentor, develop, and assess your technical team
  • Travel (domestically or internationally) up to 25%
You Must Have
  • M.S. completed
  • Minimum 7 years of post-graduate experience (M.S. or Ph.D. inclusive) in quantum computing, scientific research, or advanced R&D involving hardware
  • Minimum 1 year of experience serving as the technical and/or people leader of an advanced technical team
  • Ability to read, write, and verbally communicate technical topics in English
  • Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People’s Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen
We Value
  • Proven hardware expertise in atomic physics systems, superconducting qubits, or other quantum computing platforms
  • Experience in complex task or program management (schedule, risk/opportunity, etc.)
  • A track record of high-technology (engineering or physical sciences) research and development, demonstrated by scholarly publications or granted patent
  • A background in international and/or remote collaboration and projects
  • Strong organizational & leadership skills; Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A strong and active network of professional relationships
