Job summary

Lanes Group PLC, a leading UK utility services provider, requires a Quantity Surveyor to support commercial management on projects across the region. Based in Sheffield with a 40-hour week, the role focuses on cost control, contract administration and maximising commercial opportunities.

The successful candidate will have experience in Quantity Surveying within utilities/civil infrastructure, strong financial acumen and excellent stakeholder management.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a Quantity Surveying role and across utilities/ infrastructure sectors.
  • Strong understanding of commercial management and contract administration.
  • Excellent financial and commercial awareness with attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with NEC contracts where applicable.
  • Proficient communication and stakeholder management.
  • Ability to build client relationships while protecting commercial interests.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Support the effective commercial management of projects from inception to final account.
  • Communicate contract requirements and obligations to stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and efficiency.
  • Administer contracts with cost control and value reconciliation.
  • Monitor performance and use data to identify risks and opportunities.
  • Prepare payment applications and supporting documentation as per contract.
  • Manage change control processes including Early Warnings and Variations.
  • Collaborate with clients, subcontractors and finance teams.
  • Report forecasts and financial positions for projects.

As part of the Lanes Group, Sapphire Utilities delivers Yorkshire Water's Wastewater Capital Projects, managing a wide range of infrastructure improvement and asset renewal schemes. From network upgrades and sewer rehabilitation to rising mains and capital investment projects, the team plays a vital role in improving the resilience and long-term performance of essential wastewater infrastructure across the region.

Purpose of the role:

The Quantity Surveyor is responsible for supporting the commercial management of projects and contracts, ensuring that works are delivered in a commercially effective and contractually compliant manner. Working closely with operational teams, clients, and subcontractors, the role focuses on cost control, contract administration, valuation of works, change management, and maximising commercial opportunities.

The Quantity Surveyor plays a key role in protecting and enhancing project profitability while supporting the successful delivery of high-quality services for our clients.

Location: Sheffield
Hours: 40 Hours per week

Salary: Negotiable dependent on experience

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the effective commercial management of assigned projects and contracts from inception through to final account.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of contract requirements and communicate contractual obligations and opportunities to relevant stakeholders.
  • Assist in reviewing commercial processes and identify opportunities for improvement and efficiency.
  • Ensure the accurate administration of contracts, including cost control, value management, and maintenance of contemporaneous records.
  • Monitor project performance and utilise commercial data to identify risks, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
  • Support operational teams with day-to-day commercial and contractual matters.
  • Prepare and submit applications for payment, invoices, and supporting documentation in accordance with contractual requirements and timescales.
  • Assist in the management of change control processes, including Early Warnings, Compensation Events, Variations, and other contractual notifications.
  • Maximise the recovery of contractual entitlements and ensure all commercial opportunities are captured.
  • Prepare commercial reports, forecasts, cost/value reconciliations, and financial statements for assigned projects.
  • Work closely with operational and finance teams to monitor project performance and maintain an accurate understanding of financial positions.
  • Manage subcontractor accounts, including procurement support, valuations, payments, and final account settlements.
  • Build strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Work effectively under pressure and meet project deadlines while maintaining a high standard of accuracy.
  • Carry out any additional duties reasonably required to support the commercial function and wider business objectives.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential
  • Previous experience in a Quantity Surveying role.
  • Experience working within Utilities, Civil Engineering, Infrastructure, Groundworks, or a related sector.
  • Sound understanding of commercial management principles and contract administration.
  • Strong financial and commercial awareness with excellent attention to detail.
  • Good understanding of standard forms of contract, including NEC contracts where applicable.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to build positive client relationships whilst protecting the company's commercial interests.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Desirable
  • Experience working on Capital Projects or major infrastructure programmes.
  • Experience managing subcontractor accounts and supply chain partners.
  • Professional membership or working towards membership of RICS, ICES, or a similar professional body.
  • Experience working within the water, utilities, or regulated infrastructure sectors.
