Job Description: Quantity Surveyor / Estimator

Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Quantity Surveyor / Estimator to join our client based in East Yorkshire. If you are passionate about precision, budgeting, and have a knack for estimating and surveying in a fast‑paced environment, this role is made for you! You will work on exciting projects related to food retail, fit‑out works, and fast‑track construction programmes, with a strong focus on delivering quality results in a diverse and inclusive team environment.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare accurate cost estimates for construction, food retail fit‑out, and fast‑track projects, ensuring budgets align closely with project objectives.
  • Perform detailed quantity take‑offs and create Bills of Quantities (BOQ) based on project specifications and designs.
  • Analyse and provide costings for materials, labour, and subcontractor expenses while ensuring all calculations are based on current market trends.
  • Collaborate with project managers, architects, and other stakeholders to develop realistic budgets and timelines.
  • Develop cost control measures and monitor expenditure to minimise project wastage and maintain profitability.
  • Evaluate contractor and subcontractor bids, ensuring project costs align with organisational objectives.
  • Manage and ensure project compliance with national building codes, safety standards, and sustainability guidelines.
  • Conduct regular site visits to monitor project progress and ensure alignment with cost expectations.
  • Prepare detailed progress reports and updates for senior management and clients.
  • Foster an inclusive and supportive work environment that values collaboration and professional development.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Proven experience working as a Quantity Surveyor and/or Estimator in the construction industry, particularly in food retail fit‑out and fast‑track projects.
  • Strong knowledge of construction processes, building materials, and market trends.
  • Proficient with estimation software and tools.
  • Exceptional analytical and mathematical skills, with the ability to interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills with a collaborative mindset.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with acute attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.

Day‑to‑day
  • Conduct cost assessments for ongoing and potential projects and provide updated project forecasts to the team.
  • Collaborate with various departments, including project management, procurement, and construction teams, to ensure budgetary alignment with project goals.
  • Meet with clients, contractors, and design consultants to discuss project specifications and budgets.
  • Review and analyse tenders and quotations submitted by subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Track project costs and cash flow, proposing cost‑saving solutions when necessary without compromising the quality of work.
  • Conduct regular assessments of works on site to ensure progress aligns with project plans and budgets.
  • Compile and present regular project status reports in both internal meetings and client‑facing presentations.
  • Participate in and contribute to team discussions, ensuring that all voices are heard to prioritise collaboration and idea‑sharing.
