Job summary

Gooch & Housego PLC in St Asaph, North Wales, is seeking a Quality Inspector to ensure incoming materials, in-process components and finished products meet customer, engineering and quality requirements through inspection, measurement and documentation.

The role involves cosmetic and dimensional inspections, NCR handling, and collaboration with Production and Quality teams to support continuous improvement and compliance with ISO 9001 and AS9100 standards.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a quality inspector role within precision manufacturing.
  • Awareness of ISO 9001 and AS9100 quality standards is essential.
  • Good numeracy and literacy with meticulous attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out incoming, in-process and final inspection of components and finished products as per drawings and ISO/AS9100 standards.
  • Perform cosmetic and dimensional inspections using appropriate measuring equipment.
  • Raise Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and support root cause analysis with teams.
  • Maintain traceability and accurate quality documentation throughout production.

Founded in 1991, G&H | Phoenix is an experienced, established and trusted precision optical optics firm. G&H | Phoenix provides a full start to finish in-house service, from raw glass slab material, cut discs and mouldings, right through to polished and coated finished optical parts, prisms and assemblies.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Join us as a Quality Inspector, where you'll be responsible ensuring that all incoming materials, in-process components and finished products meet customer, engineering and quality requirements through inspection, measurement, testing and accurate documentation.

The Quality Inspector plays a key role in maintaining product quality, customer satisfaction and compliance with ISO 9001

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
  • Carry out incoming, in-process and final inspection of optical components, assemblies and finished products in accordance with customer drawings, specifications, inspection plans and applicable ISO/AS9100 standards.
  • Perform cosmetic and dimensional inspections using appropriate measuring equipment, ensuring products meet all customer and internal quality requirements.
  • Conduct visual inspections to identify defects such as scratches, digs, chips, coating imperfections and other non-conformities.
  • Select inspection samples and perform measurement and testing activities in accordance with inspection procedures.
  • Complete First Article Inspection (FAI) activities where required.
  • Approve or reject incoming materials, work in progress and finished products based on specification requirements.
  • Raise Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), record defects and support Material Review Board (MRB) activities where required.
  • Verify reworked products meet specification before release to the next manufacturing stage or customer.
  • Maintain full product traceability by accurately completing inspection reports, batch records, FAIR documentation and quality records.
  • Record inspection results, non-conformances, rework and scrap data within company quality systems and databases.
  • Work closely with Production, Engineering and Quality teams to communicate inspection findings and support investigations into quality issues.
  • Assist with root cause analysis, corrective actions and continuous improvement activities to reduce defects and improve product quality.
  • Carry out process and product audits as required to support compliance with the Quality Management System.
  • Ensure measuring equipment is handled correctly, maintained in good condition and reported for calibration or repair where necessary.
  • Handle delicate optical components safely, including cleaning, waxing and unwaxing of components where required.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment in accordance with Health & Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures.
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures and legal requirements while promoting the company's values of Customer Focus, Passion, Unity and Precision.
  • Participate in training and development activities to maintain and improve technical knowledge and inspection skills.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties appropriate to the role as requested by the Quality Manager and Quality Engineer.
WHAT YOU BRING

We're ideally looking for someone with previous experience in a similar Quality Inspector role, within a precision manufacturing environment.
