Pway Design Engineer – Rail

Lead functional Engineering and asset management activity, providing a professional engineering advisory and engineering assurance capability and advising Operations Directors.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Ensure a professional engineering assurance service is provided and is fully effective (including technical audit), technical briefing of key staff and advisory service for all of P-way engineering.
  • Provide strategic support to Rail P-way Solutions to support the development and growth of this business stream
  • Manage development projects and initiatives, and interface with partners, suppliers and customers on asset management issues
  • Seek ways to use all of our technical and assurance capabilities to enhance the performance of not only our own Business, but also that of our customers and the Industry sectors we operate in as a whole
  • Develop and enhance relationships with senior Safety Assurance and Technical Managers in our key customers and industry bodies, e.g. Network Rail, RSSB, ORR and HMRI
  • Maintain an overview on developments in UK and overseas that could affect asset capability and economics, and the management support and consultancy provided
  • Ensure professional and technical resources are appropriately and efficiently deployed across the business, including engineering aspects of recruitment, training and development
  • Direct responsibility for three functional Chief Engineers; safety and compliance reporting line and overview for an additional functional
  • Chief Engineer and his staff Indirect support to the activities of Track engineers and Track engineering managers throughout

Requirements:

  • Chartered Engineer and member of a relevant professional engineering institution essential
  • Degree in engineering or scientific discipline essential
  • Good understanding of railway industry structure and dynamics
  • Financially and commercially aware, with practical underpinning experience in these areas
  • Able to critically analyse standards and their constituent parts in the context of technical compliance, contractual obligations, effective asset management and business development
  • Wide experience of railway engineering management (or comparable Safety Case controlled industry)
  • Demonstrable engineering management experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Team player
  • Good influencer, able to secure the trust and respect within the business to ensure achievement of the purposes of the job
