5+ PQE | Leading National Firm | Birmingham / Flexible Hybrid Working

BCL Legal is working with a top 100 national law firm with an outstanding reputation across the public, health, and housing sectors. Due to continued growth, the firm is now seeking an experienced Subsidy Control & Grant Funding Associate or Senior Associate (5+ PQE) to join its market‑leading Commercial and Infrastructure team. This role is Birmingham based with very flexible hybrid working.

The Role

As a key member of the Commercial and Infrastructure Department, you will:

  • Advise central government, local authorities, and wider public bodies on the application of UK Subsidy Control law and State aid, and review and draft grant funding agreements.
  • Work across a diverse range of sectors including housing, regeneration, energy, education, infrastructure, and health.
  • Support clients in delivering complex public sector projects and developing innovative solutions to subsidy‑related challenges.
  • Have the opportunity to expand your expertise in related areas such as competition law and public procurement.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the firm on multidisciplinary work, contributing to a high‑performing and close‑knit national team.
Candidate Profile
  • Qualified solicitor with 5+ years' PQE, with strong experience in subsidy control and grant funding law – ideally advising public sector clients.
  • Knowledge of State aid law and experience drafting and negotiating grant agreements.
  • Exposure to competition and/or procurement law would be a distinct advantage.
  • A genuine interest in public sector legal work and broader administrative law issues.
  • Excellent communication and drafting skills, with the confidence to deliver strategic advice to high‑profile clients.
  • A proactive, collaborative approach, and a passion for delivering value to clients.
