Job summary

The Calleva Arms in Reading is seeking an Assistant Manager to work closely with the General Manager to oversee daily pub operations, maintain high standards of quality and cleanliness, and create a welcoming atmosphere for customers.

You will assist in recruiting, training and supervising staff, manage opening and closing procedures, cash handling and inventory, ensure health and safety compliance, and support sales initiatives and promotions to maximise revenue.

Qualifications

• Assist in recruiting, training, and supervising pub staff and teams.
• Ensure customer inquiries, complaints, and feedback are handled professionally.
• Support daily operations, health and safety compliance, and cleanliness.
• Assist in developing sales strategies and promotions to boost revenue.
• Help manage opening/closing, cash handling, and inventory control.
• Coordinate with management on budget and vendor relationships.

Responsibilities

• Staff supervision: recruit, train, and supervise pub staff with guidance and feedback.
• Customer service: maintain a customer-centric environment and handle feedback promptly.
• Operations management: oversee opening/closing procedures, cash handling, inventory.
• Sales & marketing: promote pub events and specials to attract customers.
• Financial management: monitor expenses and assist with budget reporting.
• Compliance: ensure licensing, safety standards, and cleanliness are met.
• Problem solving: address issues and escalate when necessary.
• Maintenance coordination: report and assist with pub facilities issues.
• Training and development: run training sessions for staff and keep up with industry trends.
