Job description

Ember is the UK's first all-electric coach company. We’re building the future of public transport with a focus on comfort, reliability and sustainability. We’re committed to maintaining the very highest standards of vehicle safety and performance.

We are at advanced stages in developing new charging hubs in Oban, Livingston and Glasgow, with many more sites in the pipeline.

We’re looking for an experienced PSV Vehicle Examiner to join our team in Dundee that works across our fleet – 78 electric coaches at the moment, and growing fast. You’ll play a critical role in maintaining our reputation for excellence by conducting thorough vehicle inspections, identifying and rectifying defects, and ensuring compliance with all relevant DVSA requirements.

This role will be at the heart of the team that we are building across Scotland.

The ideal candidate will be experienced, energetic and confident with the passion to stay on top of the latest developments in the electric vehicle market.

This is a truly unique challenge - our coaches are used more intensively than any other electric vehicles in the world so not every problem will have a solution that can be found in a manual. Instead, the team often need to work closely with the manufacturer, go deep into understanding root causes and think creatively about how we could be avoiding the problem altogether in the future.

We’re looking for a problem-solver who will help to identify and resolve issues quickly, and will relish the challenge of joining a team that will make our state of the art fleet the best-maintained in the country with the lowest downtime.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive safety inspections on PSV buses in accordance with DVSA standards
  • Carry out statutory annual tests and periodic maintenance inspections
  • Identify and document vehicle defects, safety issues, and areas requiring attention
  • Ensure all vehicles comply with current MOT standards and PSV regulations
  • Maintain accurate inspection records and documentation
  • Liaise with the wider maintenance team regarding repair priorities and vehicle roadworthiness
  • Stay current with changes to PSV legislation and inspection requirements
  • Support the preparation of vehicles for DVSA roadside inspections and compliance checks

We currently have a team of nine employees dedicated to fleet maintenance. You’ll form part of a department that brings allaspects of our maintenance in-house as we continue to grow.

We use technology heavily in the business, primarily building our own software systems. You'll need to be tech-savvy, open to learning new systems and comfortable using remote diagnostics.

You will need to meet these requirements:

  • IRTEC accreditation
  • Qualifications for PSV/HGV maintenance and repair to NVQ Level 3 or an international equivalent
  • 3+ years of experience at a senior level
  • Strong knowledge of PSV regulations, DVSA standards, and MOT requirements
  • Experience in MOT preparation and safety/quality checks
  • A full UK driving licence (6 points or less)
  • Ability to work independently at times and make sound judgements on vehicle safety
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Preferred:
  • High-voltage training
  • Experience in using a fleet management system
  • Full Category D PCV licence (we will help with training if not already in place)
