Job summary

Siemens Energy is seeking a Protection Settings Engineer to design and calculate protection settings for transmission substations up to 400kV. You will liaise with customers and internal stakeholders to gather system information, ensure alignment with protection design constraints, and uphold programme, budget, quality, and HSE standards.

The role involves delivering protection settings calculations, grading studies, CT/VT sizing, and developing commissioning strategies, while managing design

Qualifications

  • Electrical engineering degree (HNC or higher) is required.
  • Experience in Electricity Transmission/Distribution with at least 2 years UK Transmission experience.
  • Strong written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, positive attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Produce protection settings calculations and reports for transmission substations up to 400kV (Overhead line, cables, transformers, reactors, protection schemes).
  • Size CT & VT; develop testing/commissioning strategies.
  • Produce protection grading studies and budgets for work packages; manage design changes.
  • Coordinate with other departments and attend design/customer meetings; contribute to tool/process improvements.

A Snapshot of your day

As a Protection Settings Engineer at Siemens Energy, you will be responsible for producing protection settings calculations and associated reports for Transmission Substations, also updating customer database where required. You will liaise closely with customers and internal stakeholders to secure required system information and understand any constraints presented by the overall protection design. Adherence to programme, budget, quality, health & safety requirements and driving through approvals will also be a key part of the role.

You will liaise closely with customers and internal stakeholders to secure required system information and understand any constraints presented by the overall protection design. Adherence to programme, budget, quality, health & safety requirements and driving through approvals will also be a key part of the role.

How You’ll Make An Impact
  • Production / Approval of Protection Settings Calculations for all types of electrical equipment up to 400kV level such as Overhead Line / Cables, Transformers, Reactors, including - Distance, Unit, Back-up O/C & E/F, Overall Differential (Bias & High impedance), REF, and High / Low Impedance / Numerical Busbar protection.
  • Production / Approval of protection grading studies.
  • Production / Approval of CT & VT Sizing Calculations
  • Development of Testing / Commissioning Strategies
  • Development of Programme and Budget for Protection Setting Work Packages
  • Management of Design Change Control Process
  • Coordinate with other departments in resolution of interdisciplinary issues
  • Attendance at design reviews, customer meetings and commissioning meetings where applicable
  • Identify and implement new tools, designs, product and process improvements
  • Coordinate with Technology team by contributing on technical issues to facilitate Type Registration including design approval
What You’ll Bring
  • Minimum HNC/ Degree Qualified in Electrical Engineering
  • Experience within the Electricity Transmission and Distribution industry, including 2 years of UK Transmission System experience
  • Positive working attitude, able to demonstrate self-motivation and a proactive approach
  • Good written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good customer focus skills
  • Ideally NGUK TP141 Settings Engineer (Verification) Accreditation and / or IET Chartered Engineer Status

This is a hybrid role can be based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Aberdeen, Glasgow or Manchester whereby you must work onsite 3 days per week
