Job summary

SSE is recruiting a Protection Field Engineer to join our Transmission network team. The role supports capital delivery and maintenance of protection and control systems. You may work away from base and assist in ad hoc activities as required.

Based in Flexible Scotland, Aberdeen, Tayside or Argyll, the role involves a 24/7 operation with travel to multiple locations using a full UK driving licence. Competitive salary and benefits provided.

Qualifications

• Technical qualification to City & Guilds/SVQ level.
• Experience and technical knowledge of control and protection panels within a substation environment.
• Ability to read protection schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Experience testing and fault-finding on secondary wiring and auxiliary equipment.
• Full UK driving licence as travel between locations is required.

Responsibilities

• Support a team of Protection and SCADA Field Engineers with technical tasks and knowledge sharing.
• Conduct protection and control panel wiring and modification works, support commissioning and upgrades.
• Carry out protection relay testing and maintenance and document findings for improvements.
• Ensure multicore cabling and panel steelwork modifications meet specifications.
• Maintain protection stores, manage inventory, and assist with calibration and logistics.

Salary:

£50,964 - £76,581 + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The role

As a Protection Field Engineer, you will join a team of highly skilled colleagues to help deliver our capital delivery programme on our Transmission network, and the maintenance of existing protection and control systems. This is a pivotal role within the business, ensuring we build and maintain the highest standard of network for our customers. Due to the 24/7 nature of our networks, you may be required to work away from your base location on occasion and assist in a variety of ad hoc activities.

You will

• Support a team of Protection and SCADA Field Engineers by assisting with technical tasks, troubleshooting issues, and sharing knowledge to promote teamwork and efficiency.
• Conduct Protection and Control panel wiring and modification works, ensuring all procedures comply with safety regulations and quality standards. You’ll also support commissioning activities and assist in upgrading existing systems to improve reliability.
• Carry out basic protection relay testing and maintenance to verify system functionality, identify faults, and ensure timely resolution. You’ll document findings and provide feedback for continuous improvement.
• Ensure multicore cabling and panel steelwork modifications are performed accurately, supporting the installation of new equipment and refurbishment of existing infrastructure. Attention to detail and adherence to technical specifications are essential.
• Maintain protection stores, manage inventory levels, and arrange calibration of test equipment. You’ll also support logistical activities, ensuring tools and materials are available for fieldwork and compliance with maintenance schedules.

You have

• A technical qualification to City & Guilds/SVQ level
• Previous experience and technical knowledge of control and protection panels within a substation environment
• Sound understanding of reading and interpreting protection schematic and wiring diagrams
• Experience of carrying out testing and fault-finding on secondary wiring and auxiliary equipment
• A full UK driving licence as this role will require travelling to our various locations.
