Job summary

Morson Human Resources Limited in Bristol is seeking a Protection & Controls Engineer (Design) to deliver front-end and detailed desktop design of protection and control systems for UK electricity networks, with no site or commissioning duties.

The role focuses on design and technical assurance, requiring strong experience with HV/EHV protection, protection relays, and auditable documentation. Bristol-based hybrid work model preferred.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent (essential).
• 3–7 years’ experience in protection & controls design.
• Desirable: CEng or working towards IET chartership.
• Experience with UK DNO and National Grid projects is essential.

Responsibilities

• Design front-end and detailed desktop protection and control schemes.
• Produce protection diagrams and control schematics.
• Carry out fault level, protection grading and selectivity studies.
• Ensure compliance with ENA Engineering Recommendations, National Grid specs, and IEC/IEEE standards.
• Support design reviews, technical assurance and supplier submission reviews.

Reporting to: Lead Protection Engineer / Engineering Manager / Chief Engineer

Role Overview

We are seeking a Protection & Controls Engineer (Design) to deliver front-end and detailed desktop design of protection and control systems for UK electricity networks, including DNO and National Grid assets. The role focuses purely on design and technical assurance, no site, commissioning, SCADA, or operational control responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop protection philosophies in line with DNO / National Grid requirements
• Design and coordinate HV and EHV protection schemes
• Carry out fault level calculations, protection grading, and selectivity studies
• Apply protection schemes for transformers, feeders, busbars, generators, and cables
• Produce and review protection design documentation, including:
  • Single line and protection single line diagrams
  • Protection and control schematics
  • Calculation and philosophy reports
• Ensure compliance with ENA Engineering Recommendations, National Grid specs, and IEC/IEEE standards
• Support design reviews, technical assurance, and supplier submission reviews

Skills & Experience

• Strong experience with HV / EHV protection systems
• Knowledge of modern protection relays (ABB, Siemens, SEL, GE, Schneider)
• Experience producing high-quality, auditable design documentation
• Background working on UK DNO and/or National Grid projects (essential)
