Job summary

A prominent engineering consultancy in the UK is seeking a Protection and Control Design Engineer for the 150 MW Battery Energy Storage System project, Europe's largest of its kind. The ideal candidate will have a relevant electrical engineering degree and experience in designing HVAC protection systems from 11 kV to 400 kV. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with standards, collaborating across engineering disciplines, and managing documentation effectively. Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, ideally with a focus on Power Systems.
  • Experience in design for HVAC systems at voltage levels from 11 kV to 400 kV.
  • Proficient in coordinating with other design disciplines effectively.
  • Knowledge of UK HV/EHV standards and constructions.
  • Understanding of ENA G99 and DNO G81 policies.
  • Ability to coordinate with structural, planning, procurement teams.
  • Experience writing technical protection system documents.
  • Strong workload prioritisation to meet deadlines.

Project Overview

We’re looking for a Protection and Control Design Engineer to play a key role in the 150 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at Wilton International, Teesside. The project is set to be Europe’s largest battery energy storage system – it will contribute significantly to the UK’s grid resiliency and net‑zero targets.

Responsibilities
  • As part of the wider electrical design team, the protection and control engineer is responsible for interfacing all items of electrical equipment typically found within an HV or EHV substation to ensure that the protection and control strategy is implemented.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of relevant and applicable British and International Standards including ENA G99 and application of DNO’s G81 policies and procedures.
  • Identify and ensure design compliance with all relevant standards, legislation, customer requirements, DNO standards and contract specifications throughout the project lifecycle.
Qualifications
  • A Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems Electrical preferred).
  • Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the Power industry.
  • Demonstrable experience in the design of complete HVAC protection systems ranging from 11 kV to 132 kV from previous roles and projects, ideally extending experience to 275 kV and 400 kV electrical projects.
  • Working understanding of industry HV and EHV substation installation standards and specifications within the UK.
  • Pro‑active approach to activities and problems.
  • Coordinate with other design disciplines (structural design, planning, primary electrical design, procurement, CAD technicians) efficiently and effectively to deliver complex design solutions.
  • Experience in writing and understanding technical documents relating to all aspects of protection systems.
  • Ability to prioritise workloads in a proactive and organised fashion using software tools as necessary to ensure key deadlines are met and relevant parties are kept informed.
