Job summary

Lancashire County Council’s Legal Services team at County Hall seeks a skilled commercial property lawyer to join on a part-time, permanent basis in Preston. You will manage a complex caseload, draft and negotiate high-value property documents, and provide strategic legal advice to internal clients while ensuring policy compliance.

A strong background in property law and public sector awareness is essential.

Qualifications

  • Must be a qualified solicitor, barrister, or CILEX Fellow with a current practising certificate.
  • Strong drafting, negotiation and communication skills are essential.
  • Excellent research and analytical abilities are required.
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload and work independently.
  • Knowledge of local government and public law is desirable.

Responsibilities

Salary 46,142- 51,356 per annum | Part time 22.2 hours per week (days and times to be agreed), Permanent | Preston | Pro Rata

Are you a skilled commercial property lawyer looking for a new opportunity to make a meaningful impact? Join our Legal Services team at County Hall and help shape the future of Lancashire’s property portfolio.

  • Manage a complex caseload involving all aspects of commercial property work.
  • Provide technical legal advice to internal clients and stakeholders.
  • Draft and negotiate complex legal documents for a wide range of property transactions.
  • Advise on law and practice relating to the structure of transactions and commercial property law.
  • Apply legal knowledge to support the council’s strategic objectives while ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
What we're looking for
  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, or equivalent with a current practising certificate with developed experience in commercial property law.
  • Strong drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Excellent research and analytical abilities.
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload and work independently.
  • Knowledge of local government and public law is desirable.

Local Government Reorganisation: The Government has confirmed that local government across Lancashire will be reorganised, with the current 15 councils being replaced by four new unitary councils covering North, South, East and West Lancashire from April 2028. If you are successful in your application, you will initially join Lancashire County Council. However, as part of the planned transition, your employment will transfer to one of the new unitary councils from April 2028, subject to the implementation of the reorganisation and relevant employment legislation.
