Job summary

WSP is seeking a Project Manager in its PMCM Rail team to drive delivery of complex rail projects of regional, national and international significance. You will work embedded with client teams and multidisciplinary project groups, often from WSP or client offices or on site, with hybrid working where possible.

You will coordinate diverse teams, manage budgets and schedules, and act as the primary client contact through design and construction stages while ensuring safety, regulatory compliance

Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering or management required.
  • Chartered membership or nearing completion advantageous.
  • APM / MSP / PMI / PRINCE2 / Six Sigma certifications beneficial.
  • Experience managing NEC3 / NEC4 contracts.
  • Experience in project controls and technical/project management.
  • Experience delivering client-side rail design and build projects.
  • Experience with Rail entities (e.g., TfW, Network Rail) advantageous.
  • Proven ability to manage workstreams within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Curiosity, solution focus and responsiveness to client issues.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate disciplines through project meetings and workshops to resolve issues.
  • Establish and maintain robust project processes and procedures.
  • Act as primary client contact for design and construction phases.
  • Develop and manage client and stakeholder relationships.
  • Compile monthly project reports and data-based scenarios for senior management.
  • Engage regulators, local authorities and community groups.
  • Facilitate regular project meetings, presentations and progress reports.
  • Manage contracts under NEC3 / NEC4 rules.
  • Manage project budgets: cost estimation, tracking, reporting and invoicing.
  • Drive safety leadership and CDM compliance.
  • Define project scope, goals and deliverables with client and stakeholders.
  • Liaise with planners to develop detailed project plans, timelines, budgets, resources and risk.
  • Oversee project execution, ensuring adherence to plans and schedules.

Job Description

As a Project Manager in WSP’s PMCM Rail team, you will enable the delivery of complex rail projects of regional, national and international significance. You will ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget and compliant with all statutory and regulatory requirements.

You will work embedded with client teams and our multidisciplinary project teams, often from WSP offices, client offices or on site. You will travel to sites as required and, where possible, use WSP’s hybrid working model.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate relevant disciplines through project meetings and workshops, resolving critical issues in a timely manner.
  • Establish and maintain robust project processes and procedures.
  • Act as the primary client point of contact for design and construction phases.
  • Develop and manage client and stakeholder relationships, influencing and listening effectively.
  • Compile monthly project reports and data‑based scenarios for senior management.
  • Engage internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, local authorities and community groups.
  • Facilitate regular project meetings, presentations and progress reports.
  • Address stakeholder concerns and manage expectations.
  • Manage contracts in accordance with NEC3 / NEC4 rules of engagement.
  • Manage project budgets: cost estimation, tracking, reporting and invoice approval.
  • Optimise resource utilisation and ensure financial performance aligns with project goals.
  • Manage changes and delays, ensuring resolutions or mitigations are implemented.
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks, establishing mitigation measures.
  • Handle RFIs, early warnings and general communications to reduce risk.
  • Serve as a safety leader, driving safety performance and compliance with CDM regulations.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted safely and environmentally responsibly.
  • Define project scope, goals and deliverables in collaboration with client and stakeholders.
  • Liaise with planners to develop detailed project plans, timelines, budgets, resources and risk.
  • Oversee project execution, ensuring adherence to plans and schedules.
  • Monitor progress, identify issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Drive innovative design and construction solutions, evaluating and integrating new technologies and methodologies.
Qualifications
  • A degree in a relevant engineering or management discipline.
  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional body or nearing completion of the status.
  • APM / MSP / PMI / PRINCE2 / Six Sigma certifications are considered beneficial.
  • Experience managing NEC3 / NEC4 contracts.
  • Experience in technical and project management, including project controls.
  • Experience delivering client‑side design and build rail projects.
  • Experience with Transport for Wales, Network Rail or similar rail entities is advantageous.
  • Proven ability to manage successful workstreams within a multi‑disciplinary delivery team.
  • Demonstrates curiosity, solution focus and responsiveness to client issues.
