Job summary

ADAS Archaeology and Historic Building is seeking a Project Manager for a full-time permanent role. Hybrid home/office-based with flexible location from Romsey, Boxworth or Derby offices. Immediate appointment and opportunities for development.

Ideal candidates have 15+ years in commercial archaeological fieldwork, MCIfA accreditation, strong MS Office skills, and proven ability to lead teams, manage health and safety documentation, and liaise with clients and stakeholders.

  • Significant professional experience (15+ years) in commercial archaeological fieldwork and project leadership.
  • Degree level education or higher in a relevant subject; MCIfA accreditation preferred.
  • Experience in health and safety documentation, reports, and client liaison.

Responsibilities

  • Lead archaeological fieldwork and post-excavation activities, including project mobilisation and team leadership.
  • Oversee tendering, programming, QC, and approvals; maintain sales pipeline with clients.
  • Provide regular progress updates to Senior Management and ensure regulatory compliance.

Job description

Our Archaeology and Historic Building business comprises a highly skilled team focused on providing historic environment consultancy and fieldwork services throughout the planning process from pre-land acquisition to the discharge of planning conditions. As a result of our success in fieldwork services, we are seeking a Project Manager on a full-time permanent basis. This is a hybrid home and office-based role and the location of the positions can be flexible, but it is expected that the successful candidates will be based out of either our Romsey, Boxworth or Derby offices. The successful candidates will join a team of professionals who work closely with colleagues in other disciplines, such as Ecology, Planning and Landscape. Immediate appointments will be available.

The positions would best suit ambitious and highly motivated individuals with strong communications and time management skills who are looking to advance their career in commercial archaeology and client relationship management.

Successful candidates will work flexibly on a wide variety of archaeological, geoarchaeological and environmental consultancy contracts in a fast moving, client focussed commercial environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Managing all aspects of archaeological fieldwork and post-excavation (project mobilisation, leading the team, client and curatorial liaison, invoicing, tracking etc.);
  • All aspects of project tendering, including programming, QC and approvals;
  • Ensuring the company sales pipeline is maintained through building relationships with existing and new clients;
  • Providing regular performance updates (progress, commercial, health & safety) to Senior Management;
  • Providing clear and concise briefings (and de-briefings) for fieldwork teams;
  • Assisting the ADAS Admin Support team in the coordination of project logistics requirements in a timely manner;
  • Producing Written Schemes of Investigations, archaeological fieldwork reports, publication reports and collated project archives for complex and/or large-scale projects in accordance with relevant legislation, planning policy and CIfA standards and guidance;
  • To work closely and liaise effectively with ADAS staff and inter alia on-site subcontractors, Principal Contractors, Curators, other stakeholders and members of the public in a collaborative and supportive environment, on and off-site;
  • To represent ADAS Archaeology in a professional, diligent and courteous manner at all times;
  • To ensure that health, safety and wellbeing methodologies, documentation and policies are prepared, understood and followed by the archaeological team and all others on-site to ensure a safe working environment;
  • Producing Risk Assessments, Dynamic Risk Assessments and site audits as required; and
  • Ensuring that work is completed to the required legislative standard, delivered on time, meets project profit targets, is delivered to the Client’s satisfaction, and of a high archaeological standard.
Person Specification
Essential
  • Significant professional experience (15 + years) working in commercial archaeological fieldwork, including directing to a high standard complex and/or large-scale archaeological projects through fieldwork, assessment and publication;
  • MCIfA accreditation;
  • Excellent communication and motivational skills, and a positive attitude;
  • Experience in preparation of Health and Safety site documentation, WSIs and grey literature mitigation reports;
  • Production of peer-reviewed academic archaeological publications;
  • Full clean UK driving licence;
  • Excellent knowledge of the MS Office suite of programmes (in particular MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint);
  • Appropriate accreditations and/or membership (e.g. APM, SMSTS, IOSH Managing Safely, PRINCE2 etc.);
  • Experiencing presenting the results of archaeological investigations to both professional and lay audiences;
  • Right to work in the UK; and
  • Degree level education or higher in a relevant subject.
Desirable
  • Experience supporting community engagement and other outreach initiatives;
  • Appropriate archaeological and/or heritage-related specialist knowledge; and
  • Familiarity with programming software (e.g. MS Project, P6 etc.).
Salary And Benefits
  • Up to £45,183 to £50,182 per annum depending on experience
