Job summary

Hitachi Rail GTS UK Limited in Glasgow, UK, is seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead the delivery of a major project or its components. You will guide multidisciplinary teams, ensuring projects meet time, cost, and quality targets while maintaining strong governance and reporting throughout the lifecycle.

Qualifications

• Strong professional project-management skills with a track record of delivering projects on time and within budget.

Responsibilities

• Take overall responsibility for project delivery performance against time, cost and quality objectives.
• Provide direction, leadership and motivation to the project team.
• Ensure delivery follows Hitachi Rail’s governance and control processes.
• Manage project plans, schedules, resources, risks, opportunities and performance reporting.
• Manage changes including variations and claims and record approved baselines.
• Support achievement of programme KPIs including revenue, cash and EBIT.
• Build and maintain relationships with customers, partners, suppliers and internal stakeholders.
• Provide clear, concise project-performance information to senior managers and customer reps.
• Investigate cost variances and support corrective action.
• Coach and develop less-experienced Project Managers.
• Collaborate with PMO and other functions to drive successful outcomes.

Your New Role

We are looking for an experienced Project Manager to take responsibility for the successful delivery of a project, or a defined part of a major and complex project, within Hitachi Rail.

You will lead project delivery against agreed time, cost and quality objectives, providing clear direction to multidisciplinary teams and maintaining effective governance, reporting and control throughout the project lifecycle.

Working closely with customers, suppliers, project leadership teams and colleagues across Engineering, Finance, Commercial, Legal, Quality, Health and Safety, Operations, and Sales and Marketing, you will build strong relationships and help ensure that project commitments are delivered successfully.

This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially aware project professional who combines strong delivery capability with positive leadership, clear communication and a commitment to developing others.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Taking overall responsibility for project delivery performance, ensuring the project or assigned work package is successfully managed against time, cost and quality objectives
• Providing direction, leadership and motivation to the project team
• Ensuring delivery is undertaken in accordance with Hitachi Rail’s project governance and control processes
• Managing project plans, schedules, resources, risks, opportunities and performance reporting
• Managing project change effectively, including variations and claims, and ensuring changes against the approved baseline are recorded and controlled
• Supporting the achievement of programme or portfolio business KPIs, including revenue, cash and EBIT
• Building and maintaining effective relationships with customers, partners, suppliers and internal stakeholders
• Providing clear, concise and relevant project-performance information to senior managers and customer representatives
• Investigating cost variances and supporting appropriate corrective action
• Coaching and supporting the development of less-experienced Project Managers
• Working collaboratively with the Project Management Office and other business functions to support successful project outcomes

Essential Skills and Experience

• Strong professional project-management skills, supported by experience of successfully delivering projects
• Effective team leadership and people-management experience
• Strong stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to work confidently with customers, partners and suppliers
• The ability to present succinct and relevant project-performance information to senior business leaders and customer representatives
• Experience of project planning and scheduling, resource management, risk and opportunity management, change control and project governance
• Commercial and financial acumen, including an understanding of estimating and budgeting
• Strong analytical capability, including the ability to investigate and understand cost variances
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and motivational skills
• The ability to coach and develop less-experienced project professionals

Desirable Skills and Experience

• Experience of effective project launch and closure management
• Experience within the rail industry or another technical environment
• Knowledge of transportation solutions, including train control, communication or safety systems
• Experience of P6 scheduling, schedule-maturity assessment or Quantitative Schedule Risk Analysis
• IPMA Level D or C accreditation, or an equivalent professional project-management qualification
