Your Job

The Project Engineer will act as the technical focal point for systems integration projects involving vessels, process skids, and modular systems in regulated industries such as oil and gas, chemical, and petrochemical. This role is critical to ensuring effective communication and coordination between clients and all engineering disciplines, including process, CAD, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation. The engineer will support the Project Manager by addressing complex technical queries, driving timely delivery of engineering outputs, supporting procurement activities, managing documentation, applying economic thinking, resolving technical issues, and maintaining attention to detail. The successful candidate is also expected to prepare, modify, review, and approve technical documents, as well as read and interpret Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) confidently.

The role will be based in Stoke (UK) with "onsite first hybrid working schedule".

What You Will Do

  • Serve as the primary technical interface for clients and internal project teams on assigned projects.
  • Support the Project Manager by addressing technical queries from suppliers that require escalation or specialist input.
  • Lead and facilitate technical discussions to clarify client and supplier requirements, resolving engineering challenges as they arise.
  • Collaboratively resolve technical issues with clients, suppliers, and internal teams to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Coordinate engineering disciplines (Process, CAD, Mechanical, and E&I) to ensure timely and accurate delivery, while maintaining strong attention to detail throughout.
  • Work with project managers to secure budget allocations, communicate budgets effectively to the engineering team, and ensure adherence to budget constraints.
  • Apply economic thinking by considering cost, value, and trade-offs when developing and evaluating engineering solutions to optimize project outcomes.
  • Monitor progress and delivery of engineering outputs, addressing any potential delays, conflicts, or budget deviations.
  • Foster effective communication and collaboration across disciplines to maintain design consistency and integration integrity.
  • Create, modify, review, and approve technical documents, ensuring compliance with project standards and requirements while maintaining accuracy and completeness.
  • Confidently read, interpret, and utilize Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) to support engineering and integration tasks.
  • Maintain and update interface matrices, integration plans, and action logs to enhance project transparency and accountability.
  • Provide technical input and support during design reviews, risk assessments, and project meetings to identify and mitigate risks early.
  • Assist in planning and scheduling activities with technical input for systems integration.
  • Support procurement activities by creating material requisitions and conducting technical reviews of supplier quotations to ensure compliance and maximize value.
  • Assess client comments on project documents, differentiating between preferential and essential changes, and identify potential scope changes for appropriate action.
  • Share lessons learned and best practices from project execution to foster continuous improvement across teams.
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports, status updates, and presentations for project stakeholders.
  • Provide technical support for commissioning planning and start-up activities as required.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Minimum HNC or equivalent, preferably in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experienced project engineer in regulated industries such as Oil & Gas, Chemical, or Petrochemical.
  • Knowledge and experience working with mechanical equipment such as vessels, process skids, pipework, valves, filters and pumps.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and general IT applications.
  • Thorough knowledge of industry standards and specifications, combined with expertise in their practical interpretation and application.
  • Ability to read and interpret Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and other associated engineering documents confidently.
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and interpersonal skills to engage confidently and effectively with clients, suppliers, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Basic knowledge of project management methodologies and tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot technical issues and propose effective solutions.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritise and manage multiple deliverables and deadlines.

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Experience working within an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) project environment.
  • Proficiency with engineering and project management software such as AutoCAD, SmartPlant, PDS / PDMS, and MS Project.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and control system integration.
  • Project management qualifications such as PMP or Prince2.
  • Experience participating in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) to verify that process equipment and systems meet design requirements prior to shipment.
  • Proven experience in commissioning process plants, ensuring equipment and systems are installed, tested, and operational according to design specifications.
  • Knowledge of offshore water injection systems, membrane filtration, or mass transfer equipment design.
