Location: Ambergate, Derby

Working pattern: Site-based, 5 days a week

Flexibility: While this is primarily a site-based role, occasional home working may be available where operationally appropriate

About Us: At National Gas, the work we do matters. As Britain\'s national gas network, we help keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm by maintaining the critical infrastructure that transports gas across Great Britain. While providing the energy security Britain relies on today, we\'re also helping transform the network for a clean energy future. Join us and help secure Britain\'s energy.

About The Role: Play a key role in delivering safe, efficient high-pressure gas operations that support critical energy infrastructure across the UK. As a Project Delivery Engineer, you\'ll lead operational delivery of both planned and emergency works, taking full ownership of projects from conception through to completion. You\'ll be responsible for ensuring all projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget while maintaining the highest standards of operational excellence, compliance, and customer service. Working closely with internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders, you\'ll coordinate resources, manage risks, and provide technical leadership to ensure successful project outcomes across a diverse portfolio of gas network activities.

Why this role matters

The work delivered by National Gas Services helps keep vital gas infrastructure operating safely and reliably. In this role, you\'ll provide leadership across complex operational activities, ensuring the highest standards of safety, technical excellence, and customer service are maintained. You\'ll have responsibility for people, projects and operational performance, influencing how work is planned, delivered, and continuously improved. Your decisions will directly impact safety, productivity, customer outcomes, and business performance. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys combining technical expertise, operational leadership, and project delivery in a safety-critical environment.

What you\'ll be doing:

  • Manage the safe and efficient delivery of high-pressure gas operations, including mechanical, AGI, under pressure operations, and emergency pipeline activities
  • Lead multi-disciplined teams and contractors, ensuring work is delivered safely, productively, and in line with agreed programmes
  • Manage the safe setting to work of operational activities, acting as Job Owner where required and ensuring compliance with Safe Control of Operations procedures
  • Deliver planned work and projects within agreed timescales and budgets, while maintaining a strong customer focus
  • Support business growth by developing estimates, quotations, business cases and technical solutions for customers and new opportunities
  • Drive continuous improvement, operational performance, and financial efficiency to achieve business and KPI targets
  • Develop team capability through coaching, performance management, competency reviews, and ongoing technical development
  • Support the CEME standby rota, leading emergency response activities and providing operational support during pipeline incidents and other critical network events

What you\'ll bring

This role would suit someone who has experience leading operational teams within a high-pressure gas or similar safety-critical engineering environment and is confident balancing safety, technical delivery, and customer requirements.

Essential

  • HNC/ONC qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline, or significant demonstrable experience in high-pressure gas operations
  • Strong technical knowledge of high-pressure operations and the operation and maintenance of high-pressure gas networks
  • Detailed understanding of Safe Control of Operations procedures, including SCO 1, SCO 2, SCO 91 and SCO 94, with experience undertaking the role of Job Owner
  • Experience planning and managing operational work programmes, resources, and project delivery activities
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, industry standards, and safe systems of work, ideally including CDM requirements
  • Experience leading teams and contractors to deliver safe, compliant, and customer-focused outcomes
  • Ability to investigate incidents, conduct site audits and inspections, and use findings to improve performance and safety
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable

  • IOSH Managing Safely qualification
  • NEBOSH Certificate
  • Knowledge of DSEAR and ATEX requirements
  • Experience supporting business development through quotations, estimates, or business case preparation
  • Experience implementing operational innovation or process improvement initiatives

Security clearance

This role is subject to National Security Vetting (NSV). Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC) throughout their employment. For further information, visit www.gov.uk (UK Security Vetting: Clearance Levels).
