Job description
Intro to Project Controls Engineer

Your extensive experience in a specialist Project Management Office (PMO) role is exactly what this position is built for. If you thrive on analysing data, understanding the mechanics of central budgets and cost centres, and providing the high‑level intelligence that shapes strategic decisions, this is an opportunity to make a significant impact. This is a role for a true PMO professional, focused on programme‑wide control and analysis, not granular, activity‑based P6 scheduling.

Role and Responsibilities

You will be joining a key organisation that acts as a principal delivery partner for major infrastructure works. They are currently establishing a brand‑new, central PMO division to revolutionise how they operate, moving from reactive to proactive, data‑driven decision‑making. As a Project Controls Engineer, you will be at the heart of this new function. This is a fully office‑based role where you will sit centrally, overseeing a programme of around 800 individual projects. Your primary responsibility will be to gather and analyse intelligence from six different divisions, translating complex data into clear, actionable reports for the programme board and company directors. You won’t be managing the projects, but controlling them from a strategic viewpoint, providing the central intelligence that ensures the entire programme is on track. You will have the support of a junior team member to handle the data gathering, allowing you to focus on high‑level analysis and strategy.

Salary + Benefits

Salary range
£40,000 - £50,000 per year.

Benefit package
You will have access to a comprehensive benefits package, which includes a generous pension scheme, opportunities for professional development, and a supportive work environment.

Employment type

This is a permanent, full‑time position offering long‑term stability and a clear path for career progression. For the right candidate, this role could evolve into a PMO Lead position within a couple of years.

Company culture

This is a unique chance to shape the culture of a new, vital function while being embedded within a very well‑established and successful division. The excitement of a start‑up environment is combined with the security and resources of a large, stable organisation. The team is collaborative, and your role will be pivotal in supporting delivery teams across the business.

What you’ll need
  • Approximately five years of dedicated experience in a PMO role (e.g., Assistant PMO Manager).
  • Proven experience in data analysis and generating intelligence reports for senior leadership.
  • Strong understanding of corporate financial structures, including central budgets and cost centres.
  • Client‑side experience, or a deep understanding of how client organisations operate.
  • Expert‑level skills in Excel are essential for this role.
  • A proactive mindset geared towards continuous improvement.
  • Desirable, but not essential, are leadership qualities and an ambition to progress.
