Mission Systems

This role is based within their Mission Systems business area. Our client is a trusted provider of integrated solutions for global defence and security, offering a wide portfolio of intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance solutions, communications, and weapons launch and handling solutions across all domains, integrating the best of industry to meet their customers’ needs.

The role

The Project Controls Manager will play a pivotal role in the successful delivery of complex projects and programmes. You will lead the implementation and management of project controls measures related to scope, cost, time, risk, and quality. Your role involves strategic performance analysis against the Performance Measurement Baseline (PMB), highlighting variances, trends, and insights for decision-making.

Daily, you will collaborate with Project and Programme Managers and lead a team of project controls professionals. Building strong relationships with stakeholders, including the project team, functional teams, suppliers, and customers, is essential. You will also support the development of project controls capabilities within the wider Mission Systems business.

Responsibilities

Your key responsibilities include:

• Establishing and maintaining project controls governance, processes, and procedures.
• Managing the Performance Measurement Baseline in scope, cost, and schedule, along with governance controls.
• Managing scheduling staff to develop, manage, and analyze project schedules across all phases.
• Overseeing cost management, change management, risk & opportunity management, and document management.
• Providing accurate and reliable management reports to support informed decision-making.
• Interrogating subcontractor data to inform project controls and monitor delivery performance.
• Gathering evidence to ensure project success criteria are met.
• Aligning project control toolsets across contracts and suppliers.
• Deputising for the Project Manager when necessary.
• Establishing and maintaining an Earned Value Management system and reports.
• Managing risk processes and reporting, including schedule risk analysis.
• Supporting and participating in Integrated Baseline Reviews.
• Developing and mentoring staff for succession planning.
• Maintaining project control documentation and configuration control.
• Providing regular project progress and metrics reports.

Experience

The ideal candidate is organized, confident in communication, self-motivated, and capable of simplifying complex problems. Proven experience in a similar role with leadership qualities, excellent communication, and influencing skills are required. Experience in the following areas is preferred:

• Project controls on complex/major projects or programmes
• Knowledge of project controls practices, including planning, scheduling, cost, risk, performance management (EVM), change, and configuration control
• Experience applying and assuring project controls governance
• Familiarity with tools like MSP, P6, RiskHive, ERP/SAP
• Focus on project outcomes and team motivation
• Experience working with multidisciplinary teams, including external suppliers and customers
• Experience implementing PMBs in controls roles
