Job description
Overview

As a police officer, you will deliver the highest level of service to our communities, providing care and reassurance to those experiencing difficult moments and serving as a trusted source of guidance and protection.

Key Responsibilities
  • Respond to emergency incidents, supporting victims of various crime types including road traffic collisions, domestic abuse, and anti‑social behaviour.
  • Engage with individuals across a wide range of situations and from all backgrounds, demonstrating excellent communication skills.
  • Work as part of a multi‑skilled professional team, delivering results and fostering community safety.
Training and Development

You will be appointed as a police officer from day one. During the first 9 weeks you will undertake personal protection training, driver training, system training and additional classroom learning at Police Headquarters in Portishead. Following this, you will enter a tutorship period with a 24/7 response team to achieve Independent Patrol status. After an initial 8‑week placement in Patrol, you will undergo a two‑year probation period, culminating in full occupational competence.

Eligibility and Application Requirements
  • Hold (or be due to graduate with) a Degree in Professional Policing, or qualify via the Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP) if you are from another subject.
  • Alternatively, qualify through the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) – you must have a 3‑year checkable history in the UK (resident continuously for the last 3 years).
  • Application will require evidence of your educational qualifications and eligibility checks.

Compensation and Benefits

You will be paid a starting salary of £29,907, rising to £48,231 at the top of the pay scale over approximately 6 years of service. Benefits include the Police Pension Scheme (2015), shift allowances, a company laptop and mobile phone, insurance schemes, and substantial holiday entitlement.

Successful applicants will attend a compulsory familiarisation event, a virtual assessment centre and an in‑force interview. Course places are allocated in accordance with operational demand; new officers may be posted anywhere within the force area.
