Job summary

Viridys, an Exeter-based biotech startup, is hiring a Product Development Engineer to take sensing biology from the lab to a physical product. You’ll work with growers, packers and partners to define what the device must do, select materials and prototype, and prepare for batch manufacture.

This hands-on role offers ownership in a small team, with scope to influence both the device and the business as we grow, and the possibility to share in upside through equity in the company.

Qualifications

• Background in materials science, polymer science, biophysics, mechanical engineering or device/product engineering.
• Experience designing and running characterisation experiments across multiple variables.
• Able to work directly with growers, packers and operational partners to translate real-world requirements into a design brief.
• Practical fabrication skills across CAD, 3D printing, CNC and laser cutting.
• Ability to solve unfamiliar problems from first principles.
• Autonomous work in a small team with limited infra and close biology collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Understand device needs in real-world contexts with growers and partners to shape the design.
• Characterise materials and select what works.
• Design and build prototypes, iterate them.
• Test performance across environmental conditions.
• Advance designs to small-batch manufacture with external partners.
• Support trials and feed results back into the design.
