The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has become available due to internal progression for a proven Process Safety Engineer to join one of our key clients. The role offers valuable experience working for a leading company in the chemical industry. You will be joining a close-knit engineering team and will learn from a wide spectrum of skills and experience.
Responsibilities
- Support the development and maintenance of the safety management system to satisfy legal requirements (COMAH & REACH) and ISO standards.
- Drive the development of the basis of safety operating envelopes for a variety of high‑hazard chemical processes and demonstrate reliability to the regulator.
- Commission and follow through to acceptance of new or modified plant, ensuring operational requirements are met and providing suitable documentation.
- Identify and implement plant modifications to improve safety, efficiency or reduce environmental impact, conducting appropriate hazard assessments as part of authorisation procedures.
- Establish best practice and process optimisation to underpin the corporate process knowledge.
- Support the introduction of new processes onto the Eccles Site, developing training programmes to ensure safe operation.
- Provide technical support in troubleshooting plant problems as identified by Plant Management.
- Actively participate in the HSE COMAH Intervention program, focusing on strategic topics of Process Safety (developing and improving PSPI’s) and Aging Plant, and addressing actions arising from HSE inspections.
- Lead HAZOP studies for new and existing operations on site, following up on closure of actions arising.
- During commissioning and trials, supervise operations on multi‑million‑pound plant with raw materials valued in the thousands of pounds.
- Balance day‑to‑day troubleshooting demands with longer‑term improvement activities.
- Manage a large diverse plant area and activities with specific process issues requiring development work.
- Train and supervise plant personnel during development trials and commissioning.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree level or equivalent in Chemical or Process Engineering with associated chartership.
- Experience working on a Top‑Tier COMAH site.
- Excellent communication skills – confident and effective with shop floor staff to senior management.
- Ability to handle a multitude of issues simultaneously, prioritise and perform under pressure.
- Strong technical acumen and awareness of own capabilities to engage with external agencies, particularly regulators, on Process Safety matters.
- Ability to communicate confidently and effectively with levels from shop floor to senior management.
- Communication and presentational skills to enable instruction (verbal and written) on Process Safety related matters.
Desired Additional Qualifications
- Chartered or working towards chartership.
- Knowledge of ATEX/DSEAR compliance and hazardous area classification.
The setting for the role
Risks and Hazards are in line with working on a chemical site. These can include chemical burns, trips and falls, overexertion, cuts and scrapes, chemical exposure, inhalation of chemicals and confined spaces. A full site induction will be provided and all safety requirements must be adhered to when entering the site.
