About Shellworks

Our vision is a world where the products around you don't damage our environment or our health. At Shellworks we're making that a reality by creating high performance plastic-free materials for everyday products.

Our technology Vivomer makes the impossible possible. It's grown by bacteria using fermentation, creating a material that is stable in use but degrades in every environment. Its breakthrough is being dishwasherable and home compostable at the same time.

We've closed our Series A and are working with some of the world's most recognised brands to replace plastic at volume. We're at an inflection point: scaling from proof-of-concept to mass-market production.

The mission of this role

This is a hands on, high ownership role. You'll take new injection moulded products from design into mass production, working closely with our design engineers and manufacturing partners.

We're looking for someone who loves being on the line, solving problems at the press, and building the systems that mean we only solve them once. Underlying this you have the technical knowledge to hold our moulding partners to cost, quality and timeline.

Key Responsibilities
Design for manufacture
  • Review new parts and tools with our design engineers before steel is cut
  • Push for the design changes that make parts mouldable at volume and at the lowest cost
Quality
  • Write the quality plan for each product: critical dimensions, inspection, sampling and acceptance criteria
  • Design the in line testing that proves we hit spec at scale
  • Run tool trials, process window studies and DOEs
On the line
  • Lead products from first off tool through to sign off and ramp
  • Get to root cause on line issues and fix them for good
Line performance
  • Track OEE, cycle time and scrap across our moulding partners
  • Find the bottlenecks as we ramp, and bring a better setup when the current one isn't working
Project management
  • Own the launch plan for each product from first tool to ramp
  • Keep design, materials, partners and customers aligned, and flag risks early
Innovation and technology
  • Work with our materials team to build process know how for moulding Vivomer
  • Explore new tooling, automation and inspection technology to scale faster and cheaper
Beyond
  • Set up documentation and change control across our partners
  • Build our playbook for bringing new products into production
Who You Are
  • 3 to 5 years in injection moulding, ideally plastic packaging or high volume consumer products
  • A degree in mechanical engineering, design engineering or materials/ chemical engineering with industry experience in CAD & tooling
  • You've brought new tools into production and stood next to a press solving a problem
  • Process fluency: process windows, scientific moulding, DOEs
  • Quality fluency: metrology, SPC, capability studies
  • Comfortable reviewing CAD and tool designs, Onshape or Solidworks preferred
  • Confident holding manufacturing partners to account
  • Excited to build the frontier of how materials are made
  • High tolerance for ambiguity, low tolerance for bureaucracy
  • Excited about international travel to different manufacturing sites
Our Benefits
  • 28 days holiday + statutory holidays
  • 12 weeks maternity, 6 weeks paternity, both at full pay
  • Heka wellbeing allowance - gym, therapy, nutrition, fertility support and more
  • Virtual GP with same or next day appointments
  • Cycle to work scheme - save up to 42% via salary sacrifice
  • Daily catered lunch at the office
