Connected Engineering is collaborating with an established, well-resourced manufacturing business based near Barnsley is seeking a hands‑on Process Engineer to lead continuous improvement, drive automation projects and optimise manufacturing performance.

The Role

You’ll analyse production processes, identify opportunities to improve efficiency and yield, and lead the delivery of technical and process changes. Day‑to‑day, you’ll work closely with maintenance, production and engineering teams to implement control/automation improvements, embed lean practices and deliver measurable cost and performance benefits.

Key responsibilities
  • Analyse production workflows, layouts and resource utilisation to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Carry out time‑and‑motion/work‑measurement studies and labour utilisation assessments.
  • Recommend and implement changes to processes, layouts or equipment to reduce waste and increase throughput.
  • Design, develop and support industrial control/automation solutions (PLC/SCADA/other control systems).
  • Lead and support continuous improvement initiatives using lean and data‑driven approaches; apply Six Sigma tools where appropriate.
  • Facilitate workshops and training to embed improvement culture across operations.
  • Develop and maintain KPIs, dashboards and performance metrics; produce cost‑benefit analyses and reports for senior stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with production, maintenance and engineering to deliver projects to time and budget.

Skills & Experience
  • Degree in Industrial / Manufacturing / Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Practical experience of automation and industrial control systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a track record of delivering process improvements.
  • Good communicator with the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Comfortable facilitating training and workshops; able to mentor colleagues.
  • Desirable: formal Lean / Six Sigma training or equivalent continuous improvement experience.
