In November 2023, MMB secured its first ever framework with South West Water, a provider of water and wastewater services to 1.8 million customers across Cornwall, Devon, the Isles of Scilly, Dorset and Somerset. The multi‑million‑pound, five‑year contract (with a possible five‑year extension) gives opportunities to innovate and improve water and wastewater treatment efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and review designs for schemes, ensuring they meet legislation, standards and client requirements; lead the development of process design deliverables such as process models, mass balances and control philosophies.
- Analyse site performance and identify risks that may impact project delivery; develop mitigation strategies to avoid negative impacts or exploit opportunities.
- Challenge process selection and delivery effectiveness of initial solutions to provide best‑value solutions for the client.
- Identify opportunities for innovation to meet whole‑life cost and net‑zero drivers.
- Produce and review technical specifications and schedules for procurement activities; review supplier tender bids and technical submissions.
- Apply and contribute to design standards, maintaining good knowledge of client and industry standards.
- Appropriately challenge client specifications and present and defend solutions to complex problems.
- Identify opportunities to improve delivery processes, including development and implementation of standard designs, sustainable solutions and digital tools.
- Act as technical checker on project documents and undertake technical reviews for projects across teams.
- Manage interfaces and integration of design with other disciplines and produce documentation.
- Seek input from other engineers, specialists, client and project team members to improve understanding and deliver fit‑for‑purpose solutions.
- Collaborate closely with commercial, operational and construction teams to develop efficient, practical and safe solutions throughout design stages, construction and beyond.
- Supervise and mentor graduates and engineers, assisting them to develop knowledge and skills.
- Positively engage with the client, managing relationships and adopting a one‑team approach.
- Undertake site reviews to ensure buildability of solutions and integration within existing systems.
Qualifications
- Degree in Chemical Engineering or a relevant Process Engineering field.
- Working towards Chartered or Incorporated membership of a professional institution (e.g. ICE, IMechE) or equivalent experience.
- Experience and understanding of water and/or wastewater unit processes and treatment plant, with delivery of process design for wastewater projects.
- Experience of HAZOP studies as chair or team member is advantageous.
