Job summary

Mott MacDonald Bentley is seeking a Process Engineer to work on water infrastructure projects in Exeter. You will design and review process schemes, ensuring compliance with legislation and client requirements, and lead deliverables such as process models, mass balances and control philosophies.

The role involves collaborating with cross‑disciplinary teams, mentoring graduates and engineers, and contributing to innovative, sustainable solutions across design, construction and beyond.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering or a relevant Process Engineering field.
  • Working towards Chartered or Incorporated membership (e.g. ICE, IMechE) or equivalent experience.
  • Experience and understanding of water and/or wastewater unit processes and treatment plant, with delivery of process design for wastewater projects.
  • Experience of HAZOP studies as chair or team member is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review designs for schemes meeting legislation, standards and client requirements; lead the development of process design deliverables such as process models, mass balances and control philosophies.
  • Analyse site performance and identify risks that may impact project delivery; develop mitigation strategies to avoid negative impacts or exploit opportunities.
  • Challenge process selection and delivery effectiveness of initial solutions to provide best‑value solutions for the client.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation to meet whole‑life cost and net‑zero drivers.
  • Produce and review technical specifications and schedules for procurement activities; review supplier tender bids and technical submissions.
  • Apply and contribute to design standards, maintaining knowledge of client and industry standards.
  • Appropriately challenge client specifications and present and defend solutions to complex problems.
  • Identify opportunities to improve delivery processes, including development and implementation of standard designs, sustainable solutions and digital tools.
  • Act as technical checker on project documents and undertake technical reviews for projects across teams.
  • Manage interfaces and integration of design with other disciplines and produce documentation.
  • Seek input from other engineers, specialists, client and project team members to improve understanding and deliver fit‑for‑purpose solutions.
  • Collaborate with commercial, operational and construction teams to develop efficient, practical and safe solutions throughout design stages, construction and beyond.
  • Supervise and mentor graduates and engineers, assisting them to develop knowledge and skills.
  • Positively engage with the client, managing relationships and adopting a one‑team approach.
  • Undertake site reviews to ensure buildability of solutions and integration within existing systems.

In November 2023, MMB secured its first ever framework with South West Water, a provider of water and wastewater services to 1.8 million customers across Cornwall, Devon, the Isles of Scilly, Dorset and Somerset. The multi‑million‑pound, five‑year contract (with a possible five‑year extension) gives opportunities to innovate and improve water and wastewater treatment efficiency.
