Job summary

ALTEN Group is seeking a Senior Process Design Control & Instrumentation Engineer to join our Manchester/Derby/Warrington team, supporting the Nuclear sector. You will develop control philosophies, safety narratives, and SFRS, shaping HMI specs for safety and regulatory compliance.

The role requires strong process engineering capability, experience with safety-critical design, and working in highly regulated environments where requirements evolve and designs change frequently.

Qualifications

• Strong background in process control, system behaviour, and optimisation.
• Experience developing control philosophies, control narratives, and functional specifications.
• Experience contributing engineering outputs to safety or security cases; hazard identification and risk-based engineering methodologies.

As a Senior Process Design Control & Instrumentation Engineer, you will join Manchester/Derby/ Warringtonteam to support our activities within theNuclearsector.

This role focuses on developing control philosophies, control narratives, and Safety & Functional Requirements Specifications (SFRS) including HMI specifications that support the safety case, security case, and regulatory compliance across complex engineered systems.

The position requires strong process engineering capability, understanding of safety-critical design principles, and experience working in highly regulated environments where requirements evolve and designs change frequently.

• Location: Manchester/Derby/ Warrington (Can be anyone site)
• On 2 times per 14 Days to anyone of the site
• Clearance: BPSS
• Experience Level:4- 15

Key Responsibilities:

Process Control & System Design

• Develop control philosophies, narratives, and functional specifications for safety-critical systems
• Define control strategies, alarms, interlocks, and operating logic
• Ensure control behaviour follows safety principles such as defence-in-depth, redundancy, and failure tolerance
• Support design, testing, validation, and commissioning of control systems (DCS, PLC, SCAD

Safety & Risk Management

• Contribute to Safety and Functional Requirements Specifications (SFRS) and safety/security cases
• Support hazard analysis and risk assessments (HAZOP, FMEA, FTA, SIL/LOPA)
• Work with safety, cybersecurity, and compliance teams to meet regulatory requirements

Process Analysis & Instrumentation

• Analyse process performance and system dynamics to support design decisions
• Identify improvements in efficiency, reliability, and stability
• Develop instrumentation and measurement strategies aligned with functional safety requirements

Required Skills:

• Strong background in process control, system behaviour, and optimisation
• Proven experience developing control philosophies, control narratives, and functional specifications
• Experience contributing engineering outputs to safety cases or security cases
• Knowledge of hazard identification and risk-based engineering methodologies
• Familiarity with instrumentation, sensors, and control system integration

Required Qualifications:

• A degree in Electrical, Instrumentation & Control, Process, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline, orequivalentmilitary experience

Desirable Skills:

• Experience within nuclear, energy, or large infrastructure projects.
• Familiarity with UK and international fire protection standards (e.g. BS 5839, NFPA, IEC).
• Knowledge of process instrumentation, control systems, or electrical schematics.
• Understanding of ISO 9001, ISO 45001, or equivalent safety and quality frameworks.
• Experience managing or auditing equipment suppliers on technical compliance and documentation quality.
