Probation Service Officer - Unpaid Work / Community Payback Team

Location: Reading or Basingstoke
Contract: Full-time, ongoing temporary contract
Pay Rate: £18.00 - £21.58 per hour (depending on experience)

Are you passionate about making a real difference in people's lives while contributing to safer communities? We are currently seeking dedicated Probation Service Officers (PSOs) to join the Unpaid Work / Community Payback team within the Probation Service.

The Role

As a Probation Service Officer, you will play a vital role in supporting the rehabilitation of service users through community payback schemes. This involves managing and supervising individuals completing unpaid work as part of their court order, helping them build skills, take accountability, and give back positively to society.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assessing and managing a caseload of service users sentenced to unpaid work.
  • Planning, reviewing, and enforcing Community Payback requirements in line with national standards.
  • Liaising with stakeholders including courts, service providers, and local community projects.
  • Supporting individuals to complete placements, develop new skills, and move towards rehabilitation.
  • Preparing reports and maintaining accurate case records.
About You
  • Previous experience in probation, criminal justice, social care, or similar sectors.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Confidence in managing challenging behaviour and upholding boundaries.
  • A commitment to rehabilitation, fairness, and public protection.
  • HMPPS Vetting clearance (or willingness to undergo the process).
