Job description

Are you ready to play a leading role in shaping the future of energy infrastructure?

We are looking for a Principal Structural Engineer to join our Energy team, supporting the successful delivery of hydropower and dam projects across the UK. This is an opportunity to work on nationally significant infrastructure that contributes to the transition to a more sustainable future, while developing your career within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

As a senior member of our Structural Engineering team, you will lead the technical delivery of complex structural engineering projects, working closely with clients and project teams to provide innovative, practical and high-quality solutions. Reporting to our Energy Structural Engineering Lead, you will also help strengthen our technical capability, contribute to the development of our structural engineering expertise, and support opportunities across a range of sectors beyond energy.

Ideally this role would be based from our offices in central High Wycombe, Reading, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Newcastle, with flexible hybrid working arrangements available.

About the Role

As a Principal Structural Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the design and delivery of structural engineering solutions throughout the full project lifecycle, from concept and feasibility studies through to detailed design, tender documentation and construction support.

You will undertake structural design for concrete, steel and masonry structures within the energy sector, with a particular focus on hydropower and dam infrastructure. You will also conduct structural inspections and assessments, producing high-quality reports that inform maintenance, refurbishment and asset improvement programmes whilst ensuring compliance with client, industry and regulatory requirements.

In addition, you will:

  • Lead the structural engineering delivery of major energy projects and provide technical direction throughout project development.
  • Prepare and review detailed calculations, technical reports and design packages for submission to regulatory authorities.
  • Provide technical oversight, mentoring and guidance to engineers and technicians within project teams.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders to achieve successful project outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant design standards, legislation and quality assurance processes.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement, promoting best practice in structural engineering design and delivery.
Your Impact

Your expertise will directly contribute to the delivery of critical energy infrastructure that supports the UK's net zero ambitions.

You will build trusted relationships with clients, providing technical leadership and confidence throughout project delivery. By combining sound engineering judgement with innovative thinking, you will help develop resilient, safe and sustainable solutions for complex hydropower and dam projects.

As a senior technical leader, you will also play an important role in developing colleagues, strengthening our structural engineering capability and helping to shape the future growth of our Energy business.

  • Strong experience in structural engineering design across a range of infrastructure sectors, ideally including hydropower and dam projects.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis, numerical modelling and hand calculations.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams and providing technical oversight to engineers and technicians.
