Job summary

Mott MacDonald is seeking a Principal Civil / Structural Engineer to join their Energy Unit's Nuclear division in Altrincham. The ideal candidate will be chartered with substantial experience in project management and design, capable of leading analysis teams and ensuring high-quality documentation. About The Role

The Energy Unit, specifically the Nuclear, Defence and Civil division, is recruiting a Principal Civil / Structural Engineer to be part of the Civil / Structural team delivering projects within the nuclear industry. The role involves supporting design activities, developing client relationships, mentoring junior team members, increasing opportunities across the Defence Nuclear sector and leveraging this capability into the Civil Nuclear sector.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct analysis with appropriate verification and validation.
  • Review analysis of other staff members.
  • Develop the skills of junior staff members.
  • Produce and review design calculations supporting analysis.
  • Produce high quality documentation tailored to the specific stage of project completion.
  • Lead analysis teams on projects.
  • Lead preparation of bids and estimates.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary environment ensuring effective communication with project stakeholders.
  • Attend site or other offices to complete surveys or attend meetings.
Essential requirements
  • Chartership with either the Institution of Civil or Structural Engineers and extensive post‑graduate experience.
  • Detailed understanding of Finite Element Analysis and related software.
  • Experience leading and managing projects from concept to completion.
  • Experience in the design of concrete and steel structures.
  • Strong knowledge of British Standards and Eurocodes.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience in client‑facing roles.
Desired requirements
  • Experience delivering projects in a highly regulated industry.
  • Understanding of the contribution of analysis to nuclear Safety Cases.
  • Experience using LS‑DYNA, SAP2000 or ANSYS.
  • Experience in Soil‑Structure Interaction (SSI).
  • Experience in dynamic loading design.
  • Experience working in the nuclear sector.
  • Knowledge of American design standards.

Engineers from other regulated industries are encouraged to apply. Training and support will be provided to develop the necessary skills for the Nuclear sector.

Due to project sensitivity, candidates must obtain UK Security Clearance.
