Job summary

AJ Bell is seeking a Principal Information Security Engineer to lead security engineering, provide hands-on guidance, and ensure high-quality security outputs across the enterprise. The role focuses on enforcing security standards, delivering BAU excellence, and guiding the security tooling roadmap in a hybrid UK-based environment.

You will collaborate with Architecture and Operations teams to validate designs, drive efficiency, and mentor engineering staff while maintaining strong stakeholder

Qualifications

  • Demonstrable experience implementing enterprise security platforms.
  • Strong hands-on experience with the Microsoft security stack.
  • Experience securing diverse end-user compute environments (Windows, MacOS, Linux, mobile).
  • Knowledge of firewalls and cloud security solutions is advantageous.
  • Deep understanding of information security solutions (email/web gateways, PAM, IGA, SIEM, endpoint protection).
  • Strong knowledge of information security risk management tools/techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary technical escalation point for the team, providing hands-on guidance for complex challenges.
  • Oversee day-to-day security engineering BAU delivery and ensure SLAs are met.
  • Ensure quality and consistency of engineering outputs with security standards.
  • Support the technical delivery of security tooling roadmap.
  • Collaborate with Architecture and Operations teams to validate designs and integrate controls.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to the engineering team.

Job description

Salary: £45,000 - 49,000 per year

Requirements:
  • We are looking for demonstrable experience implementing enterprise security platforms.
  • We require strong hands-on experience with the Microsoft security stack.
  • We are looking for strong hands-on experience using, managing, and securing diverse end-user compute environments, including Windows, MacOS, Linux, and mobile device platforms.
  • Knowledge or experience working with firewalls and cloud security solutions is highly advantageous.
  • We need a deep understanding of information security solutions such as email/web gateways, Privileged Account Management (PAM), Identity Governance and Administration (IGA), Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), and endpoint protection.
  • We require a strong understanding and knowledge of information security risk management tools and techniques.
  • Awareness of information security control standards and frameworks is required.
  • Experience working with recognised information security frameworks and best practices such as ISO27001 and NIST is required.
  • Five years experience in an information security role gained in a financial services or e-commerce environment is preferred.
  • We are looking for significant experience in the area of information technology (IT) security.
  • We need strong knowledge of core IT and networking concepts.
  • You should be well versed in IT security capabilities, frameworks, and concepts.
  • We require extensive experience implementing industry-standard IT security platforms.
  • You must have strong ownership of tasks, attention to detail, and follow-through to conclusion.
  • You should be able to challenge approach, strategy, and implementation to ensure information security is consistently considered and improved.
  • You must be able to work under your own initiative and communicate effectively with colleagues and customers.
  • You should be structured, self-starting, flexible, and enjoy working in fast-paced environments.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are required.
  • You must be able to plan, organise, and follow through on assigned tasks with little or no prompting from management.
  • Excellent attention to detail is required.
  • Attained or working towards CISSP certification is required.
Responsibilities:

  • You will oversee the day‑to‑day execution of security engineering, ensuring that BAU work is delivered to high standards and that all team SLAs are consistently met.

  • You will support the technical delivery of our security tooling roadmap, helping bridge high‑level strategic objectives and operational outcomes.
  • You will work closely with the Information Security Architecture team to validate design concepts and ensure solutions are robust, scalable, and fit for our enterprise environment.
  • You will collaborate with the Information Security Operations team to drive operational efficiency, quality improvements, and the seamless integration of security controls across the estate.
  • You will provide technical leadership and mentoring to the engineering team, ensuring they have the support and direction needed to deliver secure, automated, and effective solutions.
  • You will support the Senior Information Security Engineering Manager by providing technical leadership and oversight across the Information Security Engineering team.
  • You will be responsible for the day‑to‑day technical execution by our security engineering team.
  • You will drive efficiency, validate designs, and ensure that all engineering outputs remain consistent and aligned with our security strategy.
