An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Planning Engineer to join a high regarded consultancy based in Central London. The Principal Planning Engineer will play a key role in supporting a diverse portfolio of engineering and infrastructure projects, with a particular focus on construction planning and scheduling during the early design and construction stages.

This is an opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers, project teams, clients and stakeholders, helping to turn complex project requirements into realistic, well-structured and deliverable programmes.

The role

As a Principal Construction Planner, you will provide specialist planning expertise across complex engineering and infrastructure projects. You will develop and manage construction programmes, assess sequencing and phasing, review progress and provide clear insight into programme risks, constraints and potential outcomes.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams and clients, using your technical knowledge and practical delivery experience to support informed decision-making and help projects progress successfully. The role would suit someone who combines strong analytical and planning skills with excellent communication and a collaborative, delivery-focused approach.

Duties
  • Developing detailed construction programmes and schedules from first principles, using quantities, productivity and production rates.
  • Applying construction planning expertise across the design, construction and delivery stages of complex infrastructure and engineering projects.
  • Reviewing project progress, maintaining programmes and analysing programme data to forecast time and cost outcomes.
  • Identifying programme risks, constraints and interfaces, and working with project teams to develop practical mitigation strategies.
  • Preparing clear and insightful constructability, programme and progress reports for project teams, clients and stakeholders.
  • Developing phasing and sequencing strategies that support efficient and realistic project delivery.
  • Creating visual planning tools and programme outputs to communicate complex sequencing, interfaces and constraints clearly.
  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, clients and other stakeholders to develop robust delivery strategies.
  • Using Primavera P6 and other planning tools effectively, including programmes with appropriate cost and resource loading.
  • Providing constructive challenge and specialist planning advice to help teams make informed delivery decisions.
About you
  • You will have substantial experience in construction planning, scheduling or project controls, ideally gained within complex infrastructure, engineering or major project environments.
  • You will be confident developing programmes from first principles and translating technical and construction information into practical delivery plans. You will also be comfortable working with a range of stakeholders and communicating programme information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong experience in construction planning and programme development.
  • A sound understanding of construction sequencing, methodology, phasing and interfaces.
  • Experience working across design and construction stages of complex projects.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret programme and project data.
  • Experience in progress monitoring, forecasting, reporting and programme risk management.
  • Strong working knowledge of Primavera P6 and other planning tools.
  • An understanding of cost and resource loading within project programmes.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • A collaborative and pragmatic approach, with the confidence to provide specialist advice and constructive challenge.
  • The ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and manage competing priorities.
