Job summary

AtkinsRéalis UK Limited, through its Heritage team, seeks an Archaeological Consultant or Senior Consultant to deliver heritage services and archaeological projects across the UK and beyond. Based in our London or Birmingham offices, you’ll manage field programmes, QA of fieldwork, and supervise subcontractors, while contributing to mitigation plans and outreach.

You will bring strong UK historic environment knowledge, a Masters in archaeology or equivalent, and familiarity with planning

  • Experience in commercial archaeology consultancy.

Heritage

Bring your skills to the mix as a Professional or Senior Archaeological Consultant. You'll play a vital role, collaborating with clients and design teams around the UK and internationally. Our Heritage team leads the way in innovation and problem solving, ensuring our client achieve consents for their projects. Your role

We are seeking an Archaeological Consultant/Professional Archaeological Consultant or Senior Consultant to join AtkinsRéalis Heritage team, supporting the delivery of a wide range of heritage services and archaeological projects nationally and internationally. You will be based in our London or Birmingham offices. Principally management and QA of archaeological fieldwork programmes and archaeological subcontractors, including supporting and delivering the role of Archaeological Clerk of Works on major infrastructure projects in the South-East and East of England. Contributing to defining and developing the scope, programme, and design of heritage works, including delivery of archaeological mitigation and research strategies, and public archaeological outreach programmes. Providing technical advice to a range of clients and internal teams on a diverse range of projects. Preparing and contributing to EIA screening and environmental statements, heritage statements, desk-based assessments, written schemes of investigation and consent applications. Assessing heritage constraints to inform and influence design development. Delivery of medium to large scale projects to ensure they are delivered on time and to budget. Consultation and liaison with heritage stakeholders and client project teams as required. Production of fee proposals and providing technical inputs on tenders.

About you

You will have a strong background in the knowledge of the UK’s historic environment, with a focus on delivering archaeological fieldwork, with good commercial awareness and knowledge of the UK planning system. Relevant Masters level, or higher qualification in archaeology or considerable experience in the commercial archaeological sector akin to this level of qualification. Working knowledge of the planning process (including EIA) and relevant environmental / heritage legislation, policy and guidance. Knowledge of the consenting process for listed buildings and scheduled monuments. Willingness to work across the UK in client and AtkinsRéalis’ offices as fits project requirements; with the opportunity to work internationally. Full, clean, UK driving license and Health and Safety awareness and experience of H&S on archaeological projects. Member of the Institute for Archaeologists at least at Associate level or above of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA). Experience in a commercial consultancy environment. Capable of working under pressure with the ability to meet critical deadlines and innovation in approach to archaeological and heritage matters; Technical or specialist subject expert (i.e.: periods, themes, environmental or other field and post excavation specialisms and outreach).
